I feel stupid now. When my fob battery was low last year I inserted the physical key into the slot, not the entire fob. I couldn't understand how the heck it was doing anything since there was no key-sized slot to insert the key. It was like "throwing a hotdog down a hallway" to borrow from Family Guy. Then I couldn't get the damn thing out of the slot for the life of me. I ended up spending 20 minutes with needle nose pliers to get the physical key out.
Just tried inserting the entire fob and saw how easily it slid into place and the car recognized it. Easy to pop back out, too.
