Trying to add Manual mode to my standard CVT

Postby rvcullen » Tue Jul 03, 2012 6:17 pm

Checking to see if anyone has gotten this working on a 2011 Rogue S with the standard transmission (no "manual" mode). I already viewed a few posts and forums of guys who have added paddle shifters and such to their older Nissans (08-09) and saw it as an opportunity to try. After getting the wiring diagrams and looking into it, I tried testing a few wires and it "seems" like it may work, but I got odd results.

2011 Rogue has the control wires coming from the combination meter assembly, so it was easy to identify the "up shift" , "down shift", "manual mode", and the 2 paddle wires, all of which need to just ground at different times to activate. The way it is "supposed" to go is to ground the "manual" lead to go to manual mode (which it seems to do so fine, BTW), then basically hop the ground wire off the "manual" lead and onto one of the shifting leads. Problem is, when I do that, it basically just shuts off manual mode and goes to regular mode again.
BTW, I do have the same 2 relay setup that they used on an Infinity forum to wire up some paddles, so when I activate a shift, it handles flipping the ground back and forth.
It seems that this feature is still programmed into the vehicle, as it partially activates, but I just can't perform the shifts. it just goes into the closest gear of the MPH that I am going, and I can only keep it there, or flip back to regular PRND mode.

Anyone get this to go on your newer nissan. I can buy the manual shifter console for $100 used, but don't want to spend the cash if it will only kinda work.

Thanks for any help!!!

i would LOVE to see this idea work, but i simply can not input into this for a few reasons.
A. idk if the newer cars have the modules and maps in the ecu that will support the proper gear ratios for the transmission to change too.
B. idk if this will void the warranty.
C. i am sure it will void any warranty for the transmission if they find out you screwed something up.

The only thing i can think of, is that the transmission ECU doesnt contain the maps needed to know what 1,2,3,4,5,6 is in each pulley looks like. It needs to know the exact increments to move in order to replicate the exact gear ratio. If the map isnt there, it might go into the default down shift, and be stuck there not knowing what else to do afterwards.

-its just to risky for me to even begin figuring out. sorry man.
(and i know nothing great will ever be inventing if people dont take risks, but this isnt your weekend project car, i assume this is your daily driver - so i wouldnt really suggest messing with the car just for that reason alone. this project can potentially be devastating in a sense of repairs/damage.)

I can understand that part, and I definitely have the warranty thoughts in my mind too, which is why I am only testing at this point, nothing permanent at all yet. Just tapped a few wires.

A few things to note though:
The "maps" or whatnot are there, as when I ground the "auto" wire, the display, in regular mode, will show PRNDM. When I then ground "manual" wire, it then switches over to 1 2 3 4 5 6 and will lock into what gear it sees appropriate at the speed I am going. The transmission does stay in that gear no problem. (BTW, did have to disconnect battery for this to initially take effect though, otherwise the display would just blank out and go to "safe" tranny mode, but never any codes or EML so far)
If I slow up, and go in and out of manual mode, it does pick a better gear as well. If I speed up in it's current gear to redline, it will auto shift to the higher one as well. So at least most if not all of the needed code is there, just not sure if it is FULLY there.
I also have an autoenginuity scanner with the Nissan pack, so i can see when I activate the switches, that it shows in the system. Just not sure if I am still doing the switching procedure right.

Thanks for your thoughts on it though.

its not supposed to upshift for you. thats the whole point to manual mode, its supposed to stay in the gear you put it in. otherwise its a automatic tranny.
if i put mine in 5th, and hit the highway, i can bring it to redline and it wont budge.

I'm sure I went past redline, as it will upshift for you then as a safety device.my friends' 2012 Rogue with manual will do the same. I would say it was probably when it hits 7000 rpm or so for a few seconds, then it goes to a gear higher to protect the engine.

Did you figure it out yet?

I'm trying to understand exactly what you did. Any chance you could post up a diagram of your setup?

Have not gotten much further than getting to manual mode, but no manual shifting abilities yet. It is cool though, if you are at a standstill, as it will upshift for you as you hit redline (fun for gunning it once in a while I guess, lol), but I still have not gotten either the Paddle wires or stick wires to activate upshifts or downshifts.
If I get any luck, I will be sure to post a setup for you.
