I would still have to disagree with that on a certain note becuase it doesnt have the short stubness of a Z32 anything... The shifter sticks right out of the thing and lines right up to my shifter hole perfectly, and N/A Z32 transmission have a weird shifter fork and mount plate for it with a goofy collar like thing between the fork.

I have come to the conclusion that i may have a Manual RB25DE transmission from an R32/R33 or some other Sedan. The tranny didnt come mated to the motor.

reviving this thread for obvious reasons. any chance of getting the rear casing to bolt on to the vg30dett trans?

how can the shifter components of the 25 trans be transplanted over?

What i want to know is are the 300zx internals the same as the rb25det trans. If i trash my 25 trans can i pull it apart and swap the broken internals for the 300zx internals. Are the syncros and gear set the same from 300zx to rb25det?

i checked FAST yesterday, all the little gears/shafts/random clips, and they all are identical to the TT trans. didnt check vs the NA trans.

However, the striking rods/shifter portions are different. The forks are the same but the layout/length of the rods is different. Its most likely possible to take the rods from the 25 trans and transplant them into the tt trans though... since those arent usually what break

As far as I knew DETurbine was having good luck so far transfering stuff around. I am sure he will post soon with an update on his progress.

yea.. seems like he is just swapping the front bellhousing over, which still requires a custom ds and modifying the tranny tunnel. i'm hoping i can swap the rear bellhousing and shifting forks/rods over as well and the guts from z32 tt..

Anyone know the gear ratios of the RB25 tranny? And the stock 240 differential? Thanks!

don't know, but the trans on a stock 240 pinion is really tall geared. 200mph gearing @ ~8k rpm

This is for the 300zx but the rb25 has the same gearing

And the 240 diff ratio is 4.08:1.

not directly bolt on affiar, you will need to swap out the bell housing.

If anyone cares to see a z31 turbo 300zx transmission with an RB26 bellhousing on it I swapped it into my car about a year and a half ago. There are a few photos on racebread.com but if your having trouble identifying your trans I can send you pics (or send them to me) and maybe i can identify it for you.

Yes i would like to see your pics. Also where did you get the RB26 Bellhousing? Thanks for the info. Because if i can get together a 300zx tranny and hook it up to the RB26 and find the bellhousing im mind will be made up on what engine i get.

Bellhousing came on the front of the RB26 tranny that I got screwed and stuck with.

Lesson learned, go with reputable sources and go full clip. Its worth the money in the end.

I will try and get some photos this week, it may be the end cause I am working two shifts a day until thursday.

I am in the same predicament as John. I have an RB26DETT (see signature). My RB30 box is toast, and needs to be replaced. I have the OEM RB26DETT transmission sitting here, unused. So, I can take the bellhousing off my RB26 transmission, attach it to a Z32 TT transmission, and it will bolt right up? The only thing is a new driveshaft, and cutting the tunnel a little bit for the new shifter position? If so, that's a done deal. Off to eBay to find a TT Z32 box.

Hi Evan, I just picked up a 88-89 Z31 turbo box for the reason your posting about, mating it to a RB bell.

I think that swap would be easier than the Z32 trans/RB bell swap because of the shifter location.

Could you please send me some pics of your Z31 trans/ RB bell swap??

thanks - joel

The RB20 transmission bellhousing where it bolts up to the back of the block should be the same, but as far as if the RB20 bell housing will bolt up to the VG rear housing, I highly doubt it. The RB20 transmission is quite a bit smaller then the RB25 and VG30 transmission. I bet you could use the RB20 bellhousing on the Z31 transmission though.

Also, for those that wanted to know, I swapped the RB25 bellhousing onto the VG30 transmission with no problem. Took a good 45min .

The push type RB25 and RB26 (early) bellhousings are all the same, so are all the pull type belhousings (late).

I hate the shifter setup on the 300zx gearbox and its orientation. i prefer to use the R34 gearbox's as they have less kms. The late ones are all pull type so i swap them over to push type bellhousings because i hate pull clutches (less reliable).

For serious guys i use the GTR box with a modified transfer, by using this setup the output shaft is supported by an extra 3 bearings and tends to last a little longer in extreme conditions.

see pic of modded transfer
