A transmission designed for an L series engine will bolt up to a E1, or J engine if you have the mounting plate for it. I have a 78 200SX 5 speed (from a L20B) in my 64 L320.

Hey, that's my post from Classic Datsun Pickups!  I forgot to add that you'll also need the later 510/610 etc. type starter, and clutch assembly, and a J13 flywheel.

Okay, help me out here. I had a question about a 5 speed transmission. I wanted to know if any 5 speed transmission would bolt up to a 64 L320 pickup.
I see by one of the posts that it is possible.
I am new to the 320's so bare with me.
I can bolt up a 1978 200sx 5 speed transmission to my L320 and the slave cylinder, starter and length are the same. No modifications needed? I see something about a mounting plate. Does it have to be moved or another one created? How much of a choir is the swap and what difference does it have on gas mileage? power? etc..

The starter doesn't line up with the 5 speed if you try to use the stock mounting plate.  Luckily, the engine I bought (J16) came with a mounting plate that lined up with the 200sx trans.  I think it's the same one used in the vehicles that have a J13 but I'm not sure.  I had to do some fabrication for the trans mount and since the trans is wider I had to grind a little off of the body of the slave cylinder so the it would clear the torsion bar.  You'll also need to use the later model starter, slave cylinder, clutch, and figure out which speedo gear to use based on you rear end ratio.  I also had a custom driveshaft made as the front yoke for the 5sped is different and the rear yoke for the differential I used is also different.  As far as mileage/power I can't really say because my engine isn't stock and I have a 3.70 roadster diferential in my truck.  I have a single 40DCOE Weber with 26mm chokes and I still get about 22mpg city/26.5mpg highway.   But I wouldn't call it a 'bolt-in'.

I have a J15 in my L320 hooked up to the original box. The J15 mounts up nicely and as for the box... well it's simple to make gearboxes fit so take your pick.

cheers

I have a 520 with a j13 are you saying I can put a 5 speed or Auto in as long as you have the adapter plate back from the same car or truck and it will bolt up to the j13 from the l seris. If this is wrong or there is more to it please let me know

My flywheel came with the J16.  I'm fairly certain that it's larger than a J13 flywheel.  I'm using a 225mm 280z clutch disc and pressure plate.  You could use a J13 flywheel with the 200mm 510 clutch since the flywheel I have would be hard to find.

Well , I picked up the mounting plate and the flywheel from the 1979 200sx to go with the dogleg  I plucked from it. I will go new with the starter, clutch and pressure plate.
Thanks for the input.

I left the clutch behind. Is it possible to measure the the flywheel surface area? I guess it doesn't really matter , you said the flywheel won't fit right? I'll try and pick up a 521 flywheel this weekend.

LOL, guess I'm sol.... I don't think I have ever ran across anything with a J series engine. Hopefully the stock 4 speed works fine. I just got the 320 running this last weekened . Well, she starts but doesn't stay on . Could be my fuel pump or dirty carb. Who knows the last time she ran . Thanks for the info BTW.

Check with tdaaj who is a member on this site.  He has many parts trucks and might have a J13 flywheel.  He's in Washington state.  I've bought parts from him and his prices are reasonable though the shipping on a flywheel might get a little pricey.

I cleaned the area that has the engine type and number stamped on and to my surprise it's a "J" series. I think I have everything for this swap now!

If it fits in a flat rate box then its $10.
