I need to pull a small fiberglass cargo trailer (loaded weight 700lbs) not a uhaul type. actually called a motorcycle cargo trailer. Across from sacramento to dalllas tx. Am not having any luck with a standard trailer hitch.anybody got any ideas.I think that with the factory rear muffler in the way and the limited number of f50s uot there, no one has designed an off the shelf hitch.

Since I have removed the muffler and just have straight pipes the clerance issue is resolved.also since the trailer is so light I dont need a class 2 0r 3 hitch.do you think I could get a modified hitch?

Trailering with a silicon bushing isolated subframe is not a very good idea.

No other vehicle available? soemthing with a frame to attach towing frame and hitch to?

700 lbs. may not seem like much, and statically it isn't. But 1500 miles of bumps and whoop de doos will stress the rear suspension in ways it's not designed for. To put it succintly, it is a luxury sedan not a tow vehicle. A Loncoln Town Car would work much better with it's body on frame construction and solid rear axle. Like a truck.

I'm moving to tyler tx to open an office.I want to drive the q while I'm there.I need a little more 'stuff" than will fit in the car.

shipping the car is 1k and a airline ticket is 3-400.

driving would be more fun.

if you are towing w/ the f50...you may not be able to drive the q when you get there...soo have fun driving the Q with a trailor for a few hundred miles and then not driving it at all after that

700 pounds is the equivalent of less than 4 adult passengers, and will present a tongue weight of several hundred pounds, tops - easily within the Q's capabilities.

Modifying an existing hitch that was originally designed for a different vehicle isn't the only option. Many shops that install factory-built hitches can also custom-fabricate them. U-Haul is one of the biggies, although there are plenty of mom-and-pop shops that could also handle it.

BTW, Class I should be plenty for your application.

I just used a company called ABF Upack. Get a quote from them for shipping. They have what they call relocubes. Plastic sealable containers that they bring to you site and leave while you load them. Then they pick it up and deliver them to your new location. It would be more fun to drive the Q without a trailer anyway wouldn't it?

Replacing the subframe for leaky silicone bushings costs $1200 IF YOU CAN FIND ONE NOW....................WE purchased the last 2 In the Southern Warehouse and they said no more were going to be imported for this G50 since the oldest was over 12 years now.

I'm confused, why do I care about parts on a 12 yr old car?

Hal, thanks for the idea, I will check it out. I shipped a small pallet of stuff 10 yrs ago and it cost much more than I really wanted to pay

and dinkie13...try to think constuctive positive thoughts on a regular basis...it will help with the written ones

Sounds like a non-problem.

The suspension will be accelerating and braking exactly the same amount of weight, regardless of whether it's a trailer or three 175 pound passengers and a driver.

You could make the arguement that a trailer would actually be easier on the suspension than the equivalent number of passengers, since the trailer's weight will only be "felt" during acceleration and braking (whereas passenger weight also has to be constantly supported).

Is the sub frame design similar on the F50 as compared to the G50?

The point is that if you plan on keeping the F50 the unique parts may only be available for 10 years [especially since so very few units were imported to US].

It wasn't designed for towing anything so future results are unknown.

Similar designs however the 90-96 and 97-01 and 2002-2006 are all different widths and connection points - noninterchangable.

Rear subframes all cost about the same amount and most take the same 6-7 hours to replace.

We see so many cry when told the $1400 minimum to fix the clunk/snap noise/vibration and drip...............they go to dealers and get $1800 quote.

hey i'm just sayin...the car will be there when you get back...and it will be fun to come back to...there is no reason to risk it...i agree...i would probably do something similar for a short drive, but anything significant and I would find another way to get my gear down there.

I'm new here and was wondering if anyone can actually answer the question of finding a place to actually buy a hitch that would work on an 02-05 model. Granted i see you guys dont feel this particular idea of towing is good and want to state that, i find that an answer my help others like myself who wish to have a hitch. In some cases like my own i only wish to mount a bicycle rack on it, never tow. No worldly reason why this car or any other car in the world couldnt handle a 25 lb bike on the back. I havent been able to find any local place that will custom fab one as of yet and i dont want a trunk mounted one as they rub and scratch on the paint. And that should be more of a sin than having a trailer hitch.

I think both posts are clear.1 it's not a good idea to tow.2. there are not any bolt ons3. get a custom hitch made

Your question implies that someone is holding back information. There are not that many Qs in the world and far fewer who own one are one the forums. But we are knowledgeable and you can gain some insight. It may not be the perfect answer you want but there was alot of info in the 2 posts on hitches.

O.k., O.K., Everybody take a breath..........Ahhhhhh. Now isn't that better.

Now will someone please illuminate us as to what dreadful malady will appear upon our consecrated Q,s when we tow?

After clear & diligent (maybe 15min) research there were equal ayes & nays but not one explanation as to what happens when you do.

IT"S THE SUBFRAME CONSRUCTION OF THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. NO ONE HAS DONE IT SO QUIT BEGGING FOR A HARD ANSWER.

2. please, do what you want.

3. NO ONE HERE HAS DONE IT.

4. Please let us know how it works

5.NO ONE HERE HAS DONE IT.

I'm really sorry, but after reading both posts on hitches I think I am stating the obvious.Take all the offense you want.

thank you for your answer. I didnt mean to come off jerky about it if i did. Its just that a lot of the answers seemed to be aimed at why you shouldnt do something and not really answering the original answer. But i do appreciate the help everyone has offered. I am now a proud owner of an F50 and am totally loving it. Now i just need to find a place to do a custom hitch so i dont have to mount a trunk holder

Real easy as it has been stated in every hitch thread I can recall:

Premature failure of the silicon filled rear subframe bushings which have no other source than another rear subframe, if available.
