I did a search for this info but no cigar.
2006 M35....
One of my tire valves were damaged by an air station filler device. I got the tire topped off, but in removing the filler head, it snagged on (how?) the top 3-4 threads and nearly separated them from the stem. I got the cap back on, but in turning to tighten it, the top portion of the threaded section broke off in the cap.
If you remove the cap now, the pin is exposed about 1/8", so I'm not sure I can add pressure to the tire any further until this is repaired...

So the question is, can I get a new TPMS and exchange the valve collar, retaining the original transmitter? Or does the entire unit have to be changed out?
Of course, the object here is to avoid having to go to the dealer for a re-program. I'm getting new tires in the near future anyway, so would like to get everything done in one place.

Further, are the TPMS's used by Infiniti proprietary? I can find (online) generic (Dorman), Ford, Corvette, Toyota, etc but no one has Infiniti pieces at normal prices

thanks

I def. wouldnt recommend using a non-OEM TPMS, youll prob have more problems than not as these can be a real pain to calibrate. You can catch the infiniti ones on sale for like $45-50 each at infinitipartsusa.com. When you switch out your new TPMS you usually just have to drive at highways speeds for 15+ minutes and then the unit will reset and calibrate accordingly on your display screen. Hope that helps

Thanks, but are you saying that a new TPMS does NOT have to be reprogrammed by the dealer (2006 M35)

I thought I would chime in.

Late last year I bought some winter tires and rims. I bought a set of TPMS from EBAY -they came off 350Z. I installed everything and with in three days the TPMS were registered and giving me the pressures on the display.

What I can not say for sure is if the tire pressures are actually listed properly on the display- meaning is the right front actually on the right front. To lazy to do any testing.

This type of calibration needs to be done by the dealer, resetting the actual position. If you are going to-buy sensors try nissan first, the Maxima, Altima etc all use the same part number, infiniti and nissan share many parts and TPMS is just one of them.

Shop around call the local nissan dealers and I am sure you will save money and the sensor will work just fine.

I'm pretty sure the 06-07 M has a receiver near each wheel well. Therefore the dealer shouldn't need to do anything regarding wheel position. Mine have consistently moved (after the normal driving reset procedure) when rotating tires with no dealer or tire shop doing anything to reset anything, and they have never shown up for the wrong wheel. To paraphrase, yes, a lot of TPMS systems do have each one set to a position, but I don't think that is the case here. TireRack used to sell the sensors for our cars and say they should just work, now they say dealer programming is necessary. I'm guessing this is because apparently there is a problem with some of our cars automatically calibrating following the procedure, or (more likely) there are a lot of numbskulls who can't follow the procedure that complained to Tire Rack saying they had to take it to the dealer. IOW I'm GUESSING that aftermarket TPMS sensors that have never seen our cars but are compatible would just work too.

You can run your own test just to see if the sensors are working for each side.

set front right tire at 34

set front left tire at 36

set rear right tire at 38

set reat left tire at 40

Best if done when tires are cold and not driven on.

Drive the car until all sensors register (this can take 15mins or 1 day). Then when test is done set tire back.

The TPMS sensors on Infinti and Nissans are the same.... No calibrating needed. The computer in your vehicle senses changes once the vehicle has been rolling up 15MPH and adjust accordingly. I have 2 sets of rims with two complet sets of TPMS and checked with the dealer and you can switch away. Allot of other cars out there are crazy! Chevys for instant, have to be reprogramed per tire when you change out TPMS..

I know it was already mentioned, I have g37s wheels on my M that came with their original TPMS. I just bolted them on and they calibrated in about 20 miles.

BUMP!

Just wanted to update those interested in the TPMS (and TIRES) issue. It's Dec 17, 2011 and my car (2006 M-35 Base, just turned 50K miles) still had the original Goodyear RSA's, which weren't worn out but had about 1/8" from the top to the tread bar wear indicators. They lasted through all the issues everyone else had, including the tram-lining, but all the problems seemed to have disappeared. They ran 95% fine for the last 2-3 years. I've driven up and down the East Coast and to Texas and back a few times.

My last post here was about the TPMS, as one of mine was damaged and had to be replaced. (There was no way to add pressure to the tire any longer)

I purchased a used TPMS off Ebay (40.00) and had Costco mount 4 Michelin MXV4. They replaced the damaged TPMS and mounted the wheels back, winding up with the 2 original front tires on the left side and the rears on the right side, so the TPMS's were mixed up. The tire-bot at Costco said he "reset" the sensors, so I don't know if this had anything to do with the outcome.

I drove the car around my area for a day before looking at the display for the pressures. A couple times up to 70 for a short stint.. Maybe 20 miles total.. The following day I went out and tried the display and everything was FINE!!!

The best part of this outcome was the tires. What a world of difference! They gave the car a VERY nice ride. The difference is actually awesome!!

I have found the re-calibration of the TPMS to be inconsistent. I purchased a set of summers wheels last spring and equipped them with factory sensors. They calibrated the first time I drove the car on a hour long drive at highway speed. 7 months later when I put the original wheels with the winter tires and the original sensors back on it took much longer for the sensors to activate. It took more than 1000km of driving for the sensors to start coming alive. This included three 200km trips and several 100km trips with mixed driving in between. I thought they were never going to come back on their own and then out of nowhere they did.
