Tow Package and Wiring Kit - Do they make them for the EX35?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I spoke with my dealer and they'd originally told me they would be able to install a tow package and wire it for lights. Now that I have a custom tow package that I can't return, they're telling me they don't make the wire kits? Can anyone give me some better information on this topic? I don't need trailer breaks or anything like that, all I plan on towing is just a single jet ski. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hi there and Welcome to Nico,

The only trailer hitch I have found that works on the EX (see below link) is a class 1 with a limit of 2k lbs and depending on your state laws pertaining to trailers you may not need lights and or brake control.

Thanks for your response! We are right on the border of WA and ID and travel in both states. As far as I know they both require lights on any trailer regardless if you can clearly see the cars tail lights or not. From my understanding, even though you can get a hitch made for the car, you can't wire it due to the LED lights? Not sure, just hoping to clarify that info with another source. Thanks!

There are options to buy already made Class 1 trailer hitches ( http://www.etrailer.com/pc-H~1...00341 ) although wiring will require some work, if you want it done correctly. I can help you design a harness using key signals needed to wire a trailer to this vehicle safely.

You have actually raised a great question. I have been researching hitches for a little while now and found nothing at all for safe direct fit electrical interface. Since there does not seem to be much demand for a product like this I think if you actually plan to use this frequently (if I had a jet ski I would be) we could build you something for this. It will take a bit of time to work out some numbers but it could be done actually quite easily I think.

I'd be interested in running some numbers and looking into it more. What do you think it would take? Thanks again!

So, has anyone installed one of these?

I've installed the hitch it self and it is pretty straight forward and with air tools is quite easy. Hand tools will take a little more time.

However there is no commercially available wiring harness interface I have found yet. I am working on some rough plans for instructions on how to wire one up safely, but that is going to take some time.

I'm VERY interested in a solution to wiring lights for a trailer.

I've installed the Curt hitch... went in nicely, although the left-hand tailpipe has very little clearance and rattles a bit against the hitch. Right-hand tailpipe has nice clearance. Somewhat irritating, but I can live with it.

However, wiring for trailer lights is not obvious. I bought the Curt self-powered light module (powered directly from the battery), but now I need to figure out where to connect the "control" wires for the module (i.e., left blinker, right blinker, brake light, etc.). Not at all obvious, and I don't want to mess anything up.

As I was looking around under the rear bumper, I found a connector up and under the bumper near the center that was taped to the main wire coming from the spare tire well, and is plugged with a blank piece of plastic. It has 5 wires going into it. Is there any chance at all that this is an undocumented towing connector?

Final thought: for my use (very occasional towing), it would be ideal to keep the wiring module and wires somewhere down in the spare tire well, and simply feed the trailer wiring connector out under the rear door when required.

thanks!
