Hi all,
I just replaced my blown motor in my 2006 M45 sport with a used motor. The first thing we noticed when replacing it was the oil pan was different. Wasn't sure this was because it is from a 2008 all wheel drive model or what. Anyway, put it in, hooked it up, runs but throws a code for the VVT. Pulled the solenoid and they are slightly different. Not sure whats going on. The company I bought it from, SWengines, said it is the same motor but never gave me the VIN or the Model and year of the donor car. I'm not sure if the solenoids should be replaced because they might be sticking from the motor sitting so long, or that this motor, with its different solenoids, will never be compatible with the computer in my car and I should send it back. Any advice?

Yes, the oil pan will be different to accommodate the front driveshafts of the X model. Are you able to provide the code you are seeing? The IVT (intake valve timing) could manifest as P0011 or P0021
Does the IVT code come with any other codes? How's your oil level? The VVT solenoids need good oil pressure to operate. I am tempted to say that you would not throw a code just by the components being physically different; especially since you could plug your harness into it. If you are only getting the code for one bank and not the other, then component compatibility is not an issue and the possibility of things drying up in the oil passages due to it sitting too long is very likely.

Hi thanks for the reply. The codes it is throwing are as follows.

P0075
Intake valve control solenoid B1
P0081
Intake valve control solenoid B2
P0011
Intake A camshaft position timing over advanced B1
P0021
Intake A camshaft position timing over advanced B2

Any thoughts?

Oil level is good to my knowledge (info from a good friend who owns a shop)
