Nissan is one of the few Japanese companies that uses a timing chain. Honda, Toyota seem to use belts. My little nissan has a chain and its been using the same chain the car came with for 253,000 miles. So, chains can last the life of an egine with routine oil changes. Your timing chain uses your engine oil for lubrication. If you fail to change your engine oil routinely, your timing chain will wear out faster. My unusually early oil changes has kept my timing chain in my little nissan going for years. And i still flog my little nissan at 253,000 miles.
If your timing chain goes out, you better set aside $500 or more to get it replaced. They cost more and take more time to replace than belts. But, timing chains will rarely suddenly go out on you. You will hear a sprocket like sound incresing slowly but surely with each passing month, before it finally gives way. it will give you some sort of notice for the most part. labor hours to fix it can reach 4 hours, depending on the car.
