Thinking about getting rid of the G

Postby smockers83 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:27 pm

Guys,

I'm thinking about getting rid of the G. I've developed a big gripe with the car, that being the quality of the paint, which is right up there for me with regular maintenance in the longevity of the car. The paint is supposed to look nice and all, but most of all, it's supposed to protect the metal from the elements.

Also, the car is starting to not inspire me like it used to. Don't get me wrong, it's a great car, but it's no longer giving me the chub it used to.

All of this, and I see it getting more and more impractical. I think now may be the time to trade it in for something more practical while it still commands a decent price.

Convince me otherwise or give me your opinions on a new vehicle. I'm looking for something with AWD or 4x4, something I can transport more than 2 golf bags with, something I can load up skis/snowboards with, and maybe eventually tow some jet skis. I don't want a truck, more of a SUV.

I hear you Smock. I am growing tired of mine as well. It is beginning to rattle like a tin can and I am tired of sitting so low and having no haul space for trips to Home Depot.

I already sold my CLS for a nice price so I am back to one car and will likely sale mine shortly to get an FX35 by year end. They drive nice, still have the quick power and oh so LUX on the inside. I want to stay in the Infiniti family since a new one would be my fifth Infiniti. You might look at the FX as an option but sell your G privately.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I get sick of cars quick too. that's why I switch cars so often and of course the warranty is good to have.

Right now I am still happy with my G but I will definetly consider something different in few years. I am not a big fan of the SUV so that's out. I'll consider some good hatchback If they come out with some good one loaded with goodies.

Glad to know I'm not alone.

I feel that driving the G has become more of a chore than a priviledge. The only one reason I want to keep it is for the exterior looks and knowing that people have a high opinion of the car.

I just drove to work this morning and had about 1/2 a seat worth of cargo space available. My son and his car seat took up the passenger rear area. I had to bring a second car seat for the baby sitter. That took up the front seat. His stroller takes up the entire trunk and I still have his bag to put somewhere.

I really don't understand why Infiniti couldn't have gone with a smaller muffler and dropped the trunk another 3-4". That would make the trunk a lot more useful.

Also, going through tires like premium toilet paper is not fun.

Smockers,

Join me on the scooby side!!! They specifically ask you to be outdoorsie when you buy one. I think you have to sign a contract in blood or something

Do some research. I've been talking to a friend who says that the Nissan 5 liter V8 is less than reliable.

your friend is mistaken, or has a one in a million. Rock solid over here.
And Joe, I can get you a stolen FX50. But must be candid about it...
I too however have wondered why the FX and G use the giant boulder muffler instead of allowing more trunk room and/or full size spare. Its the trademark infiniti exhaust howl... But someone is working on it.

Doubt it's a mistake when he's processing all of the service department replacement part orders and replacement engines

Get a 4Runner. We got my wife a 2005 back in April 2008 and its been awesome. Take it up in the mountains, its a champ in snow, 4 wheels like it owns the road and can pull pretty well.

I like having the 4WD in the winter with all the snow during the winter here in Utah.

What timing....I was just logging in to see if any one knew how to fix all the rattling noises and me squeaky brakes. I bought the car in Feb. with only 4500 miles on it and now it is up to 20K and it sounds like its falling apart. One dealer told me if I did not like rattling noises I should not have bought the coupe. I have been to the dealer 3 times so they could fix the squeaky brakes. Turned the rotors on the front first, then the back, then they replaced the pads in the front and greesed everything. Quiet for 2 days then the sqeak came back.

I agree the car body design is awesome and she is very fas, and handles great.....guess I want it all.

My 2002 4X4 4Runner has 130K and handles all my towing (waverunners), mountian bikes and surfboard gear. So, I would like to stick to a sports car.

They must be failing with the brakes. They shouldn't squeak. Bring it to me, I'll take care of it.
But seriously, if the brakes are still not good, talk to customer service and you'll get something done. Just remember not to be a Dbag when you go to the dealer or talk to reps. Nice people are always appreciated here.

Wife loved the rental 4 Runner we had a few months back, but it's as practical as the G is right now. NOT AT ALL.

I can't drive around a 2 ton brick 100+ miles per day. My gas bill is around $350/mo. With the 4 runner, it would likely go up to around $500. NO THANK YOU!

I agree that it's a great vehicle for it's purpose, but I don't have any toys to haul and the family consists of me, my wife, and our son. No need for the additional 5(?) seats.

My thoughts on your brakes...

1. Which dealer are you going to? I'd pimp slap any SA that told me that I shouldn't have bought the coupe if I wanted a quiet vehicle. Actually, I'd report that Dbag to his manager or to Customer Affairs or to the Inner Circle Program when they call you (I always get a follow up call after any service).

2. You might consider going to Riverside Infinit. It's a trek, but I've had about a 90% satisfaction rate with them (except for their magical el cheapo oil that doesn't burn in my engine).

3. Eeek. It might be you... If you brake funny, or if you don't break in the pads correctly, they'll make noises.

And a last thought, you have at least 5 dealerships within 100 miles of you. The only one I can say for sure to stay away from is Infiniti of Montclare as both their sales and service department are Dbag crooks. I remember spending $2600 to have the timing chain cover resealed on my I30 and part of that service is for them to replace the seals/gaskets on all of the rest of the engine while it's out. They didn't AND they banged up the engine and left deep scarring on it. So a few months later, I have another random oil leak.

I've never had an issue with brakes, that's for sure. Hell, I have 32,500 miles on the original brakes (pads and rotors). Nor does my car squeak anywhere. The only thing that rattles is probably some loose wires hanging in the door when the bass hits a particular frequency, but that'll be fixed if I ultimately decide to keep the G and install the speakers I have for it. Maybe if I install the new speakers, I'll keep it, haha.

I think I convinced myself tonight to keep the car. Went to the store to get everything I need to make my famous chili and drove aggressively. Man, it was fun. If I got an SUV, I wouldn't be able to have that kind of fun unless I got the Jeep with the Viper engine.

So weird...I've had 2 G's now (05 and 07) and I have yet to have one single problem or complaint about any squeeks or faulty parts.

The only problem I have is the gas guzzling. Even when I drive it like a normal person I still only seem to get a MAX of 420km's per tank?? All city driving btw...

I know we like to say shift below 3000RPMS but, is there an ideal RPM to shift at for each gear to get the best gas mileage??

What are these km things you refer to?

I highly doubt you're getting 420km per tank. 420km when the light comes on?

420km is about 261 miles/20 gallons means you're getting 13MPG. I've only seen one N/A person do that and he had just about every breather/exhaust mod available and drove 90MPH between street lights.

If you're doing 420km to when the light comes on, then that's just shy of 16MPG. Seems that the autos, and more specifically, the sedans are getting better fuel economy than us 6MT boyz. Maybe it's time for an UpRev tune?

Oh yeah forgot I was outnumbered by Yanks here...

Yup, I drive maybe another 10 - 15 km's after the light comes on for the sake of my "tests" and that's pretty well the most I've EVER gotten (420)

So I'm open to suggestions of things to do/check. You see my Mod list in the sig.

Reset the ECU, and accelerate slower. Avoid sudden increases or decreases in speed oh AND test out different oils and different change intervals.

I noticed that my fuel economy died after 3k miles. I'm going to do an oil change this weekend (almost 4k miles ) and see if my mileage goes back up.

I was getting just shy of 22 MPG with 90-95% highway (cruising at 80). If it's cold

Test drove a 4-runner...hated it! The driver/passenger seat had no leg room and the wife didn't like the styling (rear hatch tire). Plus it was overpriced...we ended up getting a Mitsu Outlander XLS. It has a standard 3rd row, V6, and 6-speed AUTO (not CVT). We love it so far!

I don't know, there are days when I just want to sell the G, mainly because my wife cant drive it. She can drive stick the G's clutch is a pain in the butt...and after the stage-4 clutch nearly impossible for her. So it's just something I drive to work everyday (about 5 min commute ).

I was just trying to be somewhat practical...but it depends on my mood. I still love my car. The only wish is more HP.

4 Runner had no leg room? WHAT?

I'm 6'3" and I fit fine. It was actually quite comfy. And what Rear hatch tire are you speaking of?

Are you thinking Rav 4?

Thanks Nate...Mission Viejo Infiniti. They were very cool about everything. I am just getting a little tired going back every time. Maybe I got a lemon. I like driving with the sunroof open and the windows down (weather permitting). Don't hear the rattles in the dash, but I have to put up with the squeaky brakes. Roll up the windows and close the sunroof and I have the rattles in the dash and behind the driver seat around the rear side window. This only happens when I drive over concrete roads or rough roads. Maybe I am being way to sensitive and now I am focused in on all noises. OK time to take it back again and get the SM involved.
