On Tuesday morning as my father was leaving the house to take my sister to work, a build up of ice fell from the two story roof and landed on top of him.

Image

The dent in the back of the of the Buick is where my Dad struck the car after being hit by the ice.
He was pinned under it for 10 minutes before the ambulance arrived. My mother and sister were not able to move it off him.

This is one of the chunks that hit him, and the gouges in the mirror housing are from the ice falling.

He spent the last two days in the Erie County Medical Center Trauma Center ICU. He has broken ten ribs. His pelvis is cracked. His femur broke into 3 pieces. His ankle is shattered. His liver and spleen are lacerated, and his kidney is bruised. His lung was punctured by one of the ribs and is partially collapsed.

He was able to talk today so I was able to call him. They put his femur back together yesterday, and are allowing him to recover from his other injuries before operating again this weekend on the rest of his leg. It is going to be a long process. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated. We wouldn't have made it this far without the the outpouring of support from our friends and family.

I hate to do this, but my father was supporting my mother, sister, and her 1 year old. If anyone would like to help financially it would be appreciated. A friend has set up a GoFundMe page here. http://www.gofundme.com/ojqjh8 We don't know when he we be back on his feet again, let alone able to work.

That's insane. Even getting hit by a bus would have done less damage. :(

It's going to be a long and painful recovery.

Update.

My father is in stable condition. The doctors pinned his ankle and leg back together. My mother has been unable to get an actual total of pins/plates/screws but there are at least 3 plates and 2 pins holding his ankle together. He was moved out of ICU on Saturday. The doctors tried to sit him up in the bed and it was a slow painful process. We are now looking at nursing homes for the next stage of his recovery.

As if that weren't enough, both of my Mother's parents have taken a turn for the worse. My grandfather is unconscious and on ventilation fighting an infection. My grandmother refuses/is unable to swallow anything. She has Parkinson's and a few other issues and is not communicating with the staff at her home. It's been a difficult time.

The most touching thing is the support. A lot of people whom we haven't spoken to in years have called asking "How can we help." I don't think my mom has had to cook since this started, so many people keep showing up with dinner, and help. A friend donated a section of their chest freezer to keep a lot of premade meals the fire company members made and sent over. I'm honestly glad everyone is taking such good care of them. I had worried for my mother, as she had two stress induced heart attacks last year. I just wish I could be home.

Dad is scheduled to be transferred from the hospital tomorrow. He will be going to a nursing home to recover. The doctors say it will be a few months before he can put his weight on his leg. It will probably be over a year before he is up and walking again. The worst part is over but he is in for a long recovery.

Dad is getting transferred out today as soon as transportation gets in order. There was an issue that kept him in the hospital for a few extra days. He'll be a lot closer to Mom and the visiting hours are longer. Dad is getting better slowly, but that is all we can expect.

Sunday morning we lost my mother's mother. She had Parkinson's and has been on a long slow slide but the timing couldn't be worse.

I plant the credit firmly in our Viking heritage. We're Normans, which were rowers. My ancestors paddled their way from Scandinavia to North America. We're made of hearty stuff.

I'm glad to hear your dad is recovering. Attitude has more to do with recovery than anything else. Sounds like he's gonna make it through just fine!

Dad is home! His insurance was only going to pay for 2 weeks in the nursing home -.- or 6 weeks of home care. So they opted to take him home. Still recovering, but doing good.

Ditto! I'd hate being in that kind of environment and I'd want to be home ASAP and try and get back to normal.
