Tailgate not opening automatically

A friend of mine has a 08 QX56 and he said the the tailgate mechanism seems to have come disconnected from its mounting point on the tailgate. Does anyone know if this has some special type of mount or bolt that should be on the tailgate. I'm trying to help him out but I haven't seen the truck myself. Can anyone supply me with a picture of how it is supposed to be connected.
He is out of the warranty and his extended warranty plan doesn't cover all of the labor and might not cover the part either.
