Ok, basically, synthetic oil holds up better under harsh driving, cleans your engine better, and generally lasts twice as long. I, personally run synthetic in mine. The answer there is yes, you can run synthetic in high-mileage engines. However, if you're seals are leaking, and you don't want to do a rebuild, consider high-mileage conventional oil. And no, you can't switch back and forth - because the seals become conditioned to the syn, and when you go back to conv. they have the chance of blowing out, 'cause they will shrink and crack without the additives. Now you CAN switch back to conventional, but you have to do an engine flush. Which is a PITA. And a nice waste of oil. So...If you're running good oil, leave it that way. And change your oil-changing regiment to 6,000 miles with a filter change at 3. Just watch your dipstick...make sure you're not burning oil...you may not notice at 3k, but after 6...yeah, you might have burned a couple quarts.
