What grade of synthetic oil should I be putting in my 2012 G37xs, the dealer said he wasn't sure.

Have you read your owners manual?

My service guy at the dealer told me not to use synthetic oil nor does the owners manual recommend it.
Use 5w-30

Synthetic is great for those who don't put tons of highway miles because it will last longer before breaking down (you hit the time limit vs. mileage limit). You will also see a bump in performance.

They also recommended Ester Oil....but you don't need it.

The owner's manual says nothing about not utilizing synthetic oils. For oil it has two notes: *2*3
*2 INFINITI recommends Genuine NISSAN Ester Engine Oil available at an INFINITI retailer.
*3 For additional information, see “Engine oil and oil filter recommendation” (P.9-6).

I have the oil changed in my coupe by my local Infiniti dealership and went to synthetic immediately. They are aware of Ester oil but don't use it there (last time I asked them about it) due to additional cost to the customer.

Hi
would like to recommend (Bob is the oil guy) for oil information. True synthetic oil is made from PAO/Esters. Most domestic synthetic oil is from grupe III, i.e derived from petroleum. not a true synthetic. Mobil 1 from grupe IV,V. is a synthetic, But as I understand can not be sold in Europe as a synthetic. Euro synthetics are made from PAO/Esters. Motul - Pentosin - Total/ Elf - Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5w-30 advertises 30,000 oil change intervel (OCI) can be found at (EuroSyntheticOil)
I have two 2000 Jetta TDI's (diesel) over 200, ea. running 15,000 OCI's from UOA's on each oil change an up to 15 months. All VW & Benz are recommended to use syn. My Volvo recommends Castrol now syn. my G35x is also on Schaeffers 9000 5w-30 @10,000 OCI and will be increast I am sure when i receive the UOA (used oil Analise). But on extended OCI's use the best oil filter!
Oh Schaeffers is as Red Line. Been looking at Elf also. Hope this was some help, Just use the good stuff. OMO

These are Nissan engines. They do not require synthetic oil. If you already use it then you should continue using it. These are not German cars.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 0w-40 for my '09 g37x coupe. I've seen many used oil sample analyses and have done a pretty decent amount of research.

Compare:

0w-40 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic

I usually use Mobil1 5w30, maybe a placebo effect but the car felt much more responsive and smooth after changing to synthetic.

I recently switched to Castrol EDGE and it felt the same, so i don't think brands matter much.

Just took delivery on a 2013 G37xS and got a phone call from "Nissan/Infiniti Inner Circle" to set up a service appointment for an oil change, etc. Got me to thinking...dangerous territory! :)
Reading this thread, Infiniti Service Bulletin "Engine Oil Recommendation", and the manual, I am seriously considering switching to the Nissan Synthetic Ester oil and going to the "Schedule 2 (less demanding)" interval based on personal use. The dealer indicated to use non-synthetic oil, perhaps because most customers do not want to incur the higher expense of synthetics.
I see that the Service Bulletin references the 2008-2009 G37 (CV36), where I am assuming the CV36 is the engine.

Is there a oil Service Bulletin for later model G37's?

Any other guidance would be appreciated.

Mobil 1 5W-30
Just changed after 5,000 miles, and the oil looked practically new.
Of course you would have to get oil samples tested to really know what the condition is.

the use of the ester oil was mainly to quiet the VVEL system, with the side effect of better gas milage. the engine was designed around using the easter oil. The manual states, as everyone been quoting, that easter oil is best for engine but not required. Easter oil is a synthetic... so basically the manual is saying to use a synthetic if you want the best performance from the engine. (just like you could use 87 gas on the G37... but the engine really doesnt like it, thus reduced HP and some have knocking issues)

I have noted that my car is quieter at idle and during cold startup after switching to synthetic. the G37 is noticably smoother when using sythetic. My 2010 G37x is about to hit 100,000 miles and it has ONLY had synthetic oil in it, except for maybe 2-3 oil changes, engine runs like new still.

I've been running Mobile 0w-30 synthetic for the past 3-4 oil changes (ran pennz oil ultra or mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic before the change), as 0w-30 is a poor mans version of easter oil LOL. There is a gas milage increase runnign 0w-30, i got 60+ more miles out of my engine on my last road trip to canada per tank. (usually have about a 400+ mile range to empty; that is hiting 300 miles at the quarter from empty mark. i was at 375 miles at a quarter tank from empty running 0w-30 consistantly on my last road trip)

Remember that the infiniti ester oil is just conventional oil with ester additives. Not a true ester based oil like redline and a few other top brands.

I've noticed that our new 13 G37X has some rattle or noise at start up.
Hoping that switching to Mobil 1 5w30 at 3K miles will help.
found this.

I am pretty sure synthetic is much better oil for Nissan engines than mineral oil that to my opinion is suitable for tractors only, antway I would use them.If climate is cold at wintyer time the there is no replacement to synthtic oil.AS it is said oil is cheaper than engine. High rev engines breathe better in synthetic oils and are more economical also for daily driving.Nobody goes to track every day.
