My air lately has that stagnent water / stinky feet smell lately.

Here in So. Cal it has cooled down substantially and my air is not on that much anymore. As long as the A/C is on, it's ok. But when it's off, whew!

My Mercedes had this problem and the dealer ran this deodarizer process through it and then pointed out to me that after you turn the car off, push the "Rest" button, and the fan will continue to run and vent out all that stale air.

Does the '02 "Q" have something like this? What can I do that doesn't involve a mechanic?

in cabin filter change

In my last order from Joe, I asked that they send me a new cabin filter for my 92 Q. Got around to wanting to change it, today, and it was the engine air cleaner element...unless both the cabin and engine elements are the same (I must admit to having never changed the cabin filter, never finding anything that offensive about the air quality, but, after seeing a photo recently of an old cabin filter, I got motivated!).

BTW, I looked in my FSM and still cannot find the pages covering the in cabin filter. Help you FSM experts!

1, 90-96q doesnt have a cabin air filter

2. using the "rest" feature on the Benz helps because it runs the blower motor for aprox 20 minutes after shutting ignition off, allowing the evaporator to dry itself and therefor prevent mold growth.

My 1990 Q45 has a charcoal air filter mounted to the rear parcel shelf, and has the control switches mounted on the A/C unit, and in the rear armrest.

This unit is for filtering out the smoke/fart smells of passengers, while the cabin filter found on most new cars filters particles from the fresh air intake to the hvac system-keeping dust/pollen etc from ever entering the vehicle-a totally different approach and design goal

I just replaced the cabin filters in my 1998 t today. The previous owner was chain smoking retiree who never replaced anything. Needless to say the filters were not dirty, they were black with mildew bacteria and dirt. Replace soon, your lungs will thank you. Every car I have replaced the filters in that had more than 2 years on usage had mildew on them.

I have that problem too. When the AC is on, it smells normal but when it's just blowing regular air, it smells. Smells like a wet towel that's been in use for more than a week.

Yep, that's the smell.

Lately, since I'm still getting used to this car, I accidentally hit the "Auto" button twice, which turns the A/C on. Then I turn it off immediately and that's when the smell is REALLY bad.

I have an extra paycheck next month, so I'm getting the new in cabin filter, rotors, pads and maybe even the new wood dash panel to match the rest of the paneling.

I also, have found that turning off the ac and leaving on the blower the last mile or two before I get home helps keep the smell fresh. I also spray all of the vents with Lysol disinfectant spray while the ac/blower is off to get rid of any mold when ever I clean the inside of the car.

I've got a musky 88 Jeep Cherokee with all these problems. I'll try the Lysol in the vents trick. Where exactly do you spray?

Many brands use the same design as Nissan with a HVAC fan speed controller in the air path in front of evaporator...................an small entry port to spray anti mold and cleaner....................a water pick makes a nice tiny spray system.

A;ways good to pull and clean fan blades every few years which exposes more of evap core to cleaning.
