I've been mulling this over for a while now. Let's face it, these cars are easy to love but hard to work on.
How about this:
A sticky thread with a list of mechanics who know what they're doing with the Q45, as reported by Q45 owners. Not a place to slam poor service, but a place to refer to when the job is too complicated.
I had to go through at least 6 shops before I found a mechanic who knew what he was doing with my G50, and if I hadn't found Dana at Upton foreign motors in Upton Massachusetts there's no way I'd still be a Q owner.
Mechanics who can fix these cars the right way are hard to find but since we for one reason or another still choose to own a Q45 we should have a list of shops who can and have performed good work on this platform.
Call me a ninny or whatever but consider this: how many Qs are still limping around out there because their owner doesn't have the technical know how or garage space, or whatever? They're just waiting for the right mechanic to make them well again. Respect the cars, even if you don't respect the owners.

Sounds like a great idea.

Threads inquiring about finding a good mechanic in a specific town crop up all the time. One sticky could probably eliminate a lot of them.

Brian at Foreign Affair Auto repair in Schertz, TX. He's one of the mechanics there.
Why? Because he has owned a G50 and worked on it himself.

Great Idea - I'm loving my Q45 t three years after my purchase. I'm all about preventative maintenance and I need a good mechanic here in Chicago; keeping it mint isn't easy! If anyone has Q45 mechanic suggestions for Chicagoland or surroundings please let me know!

The owner, Mac has been around forever... they only work on imports. I was there yesterday and in his shop I saw a pristine 1972 fiat 500, and a REAL Mini Cooper from the 70's or 80's that belonged to customers. Your G50 will be in good hands. People bring their cars in from two counties over to have them serviced at his shop. His estimate is almost always cheaper than the competition in the metro area, and the work has a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty. Try calling them again on Monday... Olga should be there.

I recently bought a 97 Q45 in the Seattle area. If anybody knows a good place up here that'd be nice, otherwise I can just rely on the local Infiniti dealership.

bslyth, you are looking for Melvin G. Allen, in Lake Stevens.

He just replaced my fuel injectors (all of them) knock sensors, etc, plus replaced my PS pump, and the bill came to $1300.

He will install your parts (but not warrantee them). He was very clear about that. I bought my injectors and all the rest at Rockauto.com, then brought them to him to install. The savings on the injectors paid for the install labor. He said he'd had problems with "internet PS pumps" and that in one case, the car was in his shop for weeks as he replaced it 3 times waiting for one with a good pressure modulator. He charged labor for each install. If he had provided the pump, and there was that problem, he would've covered the subsequent labor. I decided to let him source the PS pump.

He uses Westbay autoparts for parts, like most independent mechanics around here, they are much faster than rockauto, but much more $$.

As of last month, his shop rate was 85/hr, it's just him and his partner, both old (50's) mechanics who have worked together for decades. It is a bit of a trip to go from Whidbey Island to Lake Stevens, but it was worth it, to me.

Does anyone recommend a mechanic in the Central Florida area? or even Florida in general? Having trouble finding someone who actually knows anything about an Infiniti in my area.

Hello,

I have a 1992 Q-45a with 120K miles. I live in Washington State and was hoping to find a good mechanic to replace the timing chain guides. I spoke with the Melvin G mechanic recommended above but was wondering if there were any other suggestions for the Pacific Northwest region (Oregon, Idaho, and Washington). He's only done one of these replacements and he claimed the engine should be pulled to do the work. No way!

Many thanks,
Brandon

I'm looking for a mechanic in Las Vegas NV to work on my Q45a suspension. The local Infiniti dealer doesn't have a mechanic trained to work on it and they wanted to put brake fluid into the system to top it off. :nono: Thinking any hydraulic fluid would work to test system.

I have a shop I just started using in West Palm - but they are not cheap - still looking in Florida - I am trying a new shop for the alignment that is on Old Dixie just south of NorthLake Blvd. in West Palm Beach. I will update asap.

Everyone's talking about independent mechanics. But for those who live in or near a large city, why would you not just use an Infiniti dealer? Those Q45s are so reliable that you shouldn't have many repairs at all if you're taking care of the car. (I have an '03 now and used to have a '97 which my ex-wife is still driving with 160K miles on it). One time in Houston I took the '97 to a lube shop and they stripped the threads on the oil reservoir so I had to replace the whole thing at $800. That was the last time I entrusted anyone but an Infiniti or Nissan dealer with my car. I know the major servicing is expensive, but in my experience a Nissan dealer instead of an Infiniti one is about half the price.

Well the one in las vegas doesn't have the tools or diag equipment to work on mine. I wish they did. Mine is the q45 active that needs regular maintenance to keep the active suspension in proper working order. As you stated that finding an experienced properly trained technician is very important. That's why I'm looking for an ex infiniti tech who went independant.

32nd street tire shop in Phoenix: Ask the clerk for the mechanic. One of the guys is very good and specialises in Japanese cars (and others). Bought an as is car, but turned out to be more than I bargained for. He fixed my PS pump, rack n pinion, control arm, fan belt. I won't say it was "cheap", but I believe they are the cheapest in town who can get it right and fast as the general area is near airport and relatively inexpensive. I was like damn, how does he do it so fast!? And drove all the way back to Florida so it held up good.

The caveat: You may need to take a couple of trips each time you get work done. one to get an estimate, then come back for the work and always must be there by 9 am. It's not a big shop with several service bays. There's a bigger shop up the street, but I couldn't afford their prices. If you're coming from out of town, you may do well to check into the Econo Lodge up the street, leave it with him and stay for a couple days. Although personally I've never had to leave it with him overnight.

The only one I ever knew was T3 in Atlanta. Don't know if they're even there anymore. It's been almost 20 years.

It depends on where you live. In the greater Boise area, the dealer is the ONLY place I take my '03 Q45. You wouldn't believe the abuse of the car I've had to put up with in tire shops and lube joints. Forget about real mechanics. At the Boise dealer they never suggest unneeded repairs and I incur reasonable rates there. G- series or other models are one thing, but Q45s should go to the dealer, IMHO.
