I'm new to the site and had a question about my 2001 Maxima 20th anniversary. I've been having an intermittent issue with the steering wheel controls. Sometimes they work fine, and then other times, they don't work at all, no matter how many times I hit them, or how hard. Also, every now and then, the station will change magically, kinda like the button was hit on the steering wheel. I saw some mention of a switch that someone replaced that helped with an issue like this, but not much mention of the switch or where it was. Does anybody have any info on this switch and where it's located? Also, I would be interested in the difficulty of replacing it yourself if someone knows. Thanks.

There are two switches:

ASCD Steering switch and the "steering wheel" switch. See the FSM, page EL-34 for the wiring diagram: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/i35/2002/el.pdf

The steering wheel switch also connects into the radio as seen via page EL-203

Check all the connections and make sure everything is tight. Problem could be either of the switches or the radio itself.

So I was able to get the steering wheel control module out and it looks fine. It's a little dirty, but the inside where the circuit board is looks fine. I don't see a part number on the switch itself. Does anyone know the part number so I can order it up? Thanks.

Suggest to contact the dealer or Nissan directly - I have had good luck either way in the past when seeking this type data.

Use a contact cleaner to clean the assembly as well as the main connector. Apply dielectric grease on the pins to prevent oxidation (corrosion). Ensure connectors are secure, including the connection of the steering wheel switch harness to the main connector.

If problem persists and you need to replace the steering wheel switch, your best best is NICO sponsor IoS - everythingnissan.com. At 25% off MSRP, price is hard to beat. Joe Tesensky is the Parts Manager and several people work for him They should be able to assist with the parts required. Below is the link to their site and steering wheel components.
