to start, i have a ka24de.
so lately, i would go to start my car, and i would have this problem. the starter would spin, but not pop. so it would spin for a few minutes and the stop.
and usually if i had access to tools, i would disconnect the battery so it would stop, or i would pop the hood so it could get some air and not over heat.

but today, it happened again, but i didnt have tools and i didnt want to pop the hood cause it was pouring rain.

so what happened was, the starter was spinning, and i heard a clunk/knock sound. after that i smelled something burning.

so i popped the hood and i could smell it more. so i touched the starter, and it was incredibly hot. i have burn marks on my knuckles cause it was so hot  . while i was under the hood, i saw what i thought was smoke. it could have been steam, idk.

so i let it sit for a bit, and i went to start it, i could hear the solenoid click. but, everything would reset. my clock would reset, all the gauges would go back down, all my dash lights would go off. and this happened each time i turned the key. i would also hear a buzzing sound for a second when i turned the key too.

does anyone know what the hell the problem is? cause i have no idea.

It sounds like ur starter was staying on. I think the reason why the lights went off is because the starter drained the battery because it was staying on. The smoke was probably internal wires burning. This sounds rare but I would replace the starter relay because it sounds like it was stuck in the 'on' position, burning your starter and draining the battery with it. You need a new starter too most likely. Battery should still be ok, just jump it.

well, i just went and tried to jump the car with my dad. we jumped it, and nothing happened. so we pushed started it, and i drove it home. when i got it home, i tried to start it again, and nothing. the battery is fine cause all my lights are working and the seat belts move too.
but, ill check the relay once it stops raining.

The wire windings in the motor have shorted. All you have to do to short a motor is overheat it very slightly and the shellac coating on the windings melts off... kinda smells sickeningly sweet when it goes.

Just replace your starter, the solenoid was probably stuck.

You might have to change out one of the big fuses under the hood; the ones with the clear tops.
