Since this is my first post on the forum a little introduction. My name is Saxon. I am a long time (14 year) member of TT.net and have a Z / boost addiction :)

I have owned 300ZX's for the last 16 years and had a G35 which I loved. I also currently have a Supra which is what got me into the 2J platform and really like it as well. My good friend Justin "Nancy" and I do builds for people from time to time in the Lexington KY area on both Supras and 300ZX's

I started a post over there and a member ask that I also duplicate the build thread here. I am more than happy to help answer any questions that you guys have and look forward to getting more involved with this forum.

......

My long time friend and fellow Z enthusiast "Nancy" ended up blowing up his VG a month or so ago. After a little arm twisting I got him talked into a 2J swap *evil grin*

The main reasons for doing so are:

1) Dollars to Horsepower ratio

2) Ease to work on in the future

3) And ease to work on in the future

With the changes in turbo technology in the last couple of years you no longer have a lag monster when going over 600 hp on a single turbo 2J. We are shooting for 650hp to the pavement with E85 on a Dyno Dynamics

Some of you will undoubtedly think that this is blasphemous....we think it will be cool.

Build Summary:

VVTI 2J
BC 264 Cams (VVTI compatible)
Comp CT4 6265 Twin Scroll Triplex
Cheapbay Special Manifold
ARP
ID 1k
2x4E85's
Haltech w/HPI 6
300ZX Trans
Modified 369 Diff
Custom exhaust
Custom intercooler / radiator setup

Some shots of his Z....one of the cleanest verts ive ever seen. Its really sad that 99% of all 300Z's that you see out are junk now.

I've been contemplating going 2J with mine, or RB. This'll be interesting to see a build thread on this.

Both engines are great and have the pros / cons. When you look at the availability of parts, extra displacement and price 2J is the clear winner thought IMO.

You can push well over 1khp with both. But you can get there with better spool and less money with a 2J.

Weak spot on the 2j is the main caps. At decent HP they walk and tear up the crank. Dave at boostwerx sells billet main caps.

We have been making progress as time allows. One of the biggest bottlenecks in the process has been fabrication. Prior to this project I had never welded. So after some research on the interwebs I picked up a 3 in 1 watched a couple of hours of you tube videos and got started. I still have a lot to learn but am functional at this point.

Also, some items in the pics are mocks up only and I will be going to back to properly reinforce / clean up

Welding rig:

Image

The collins adapter so we could keep the Z trans

Image

Image

Clutch that came with the trans kit. Amazing how small it is.

Image

Image

Trans had to come apart for some minor machine work

Image

Image

Had the bell housing machined to work properly with the adapter

Image

Image

Image

Started prep on the 2J

Image

A rare shot of Nancy actually working

Image

More test fitting

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Dual fuel pumps internally bridged

Image

To give you a proper idea of how wide the Z engine bay is :)

Image

Image

Cross member work

Image

Image

Image

practicing my weld skills on aluminum

Image

Image

The motor mounts that we bought were designed to work with the R154 so we ended up having to make new brackets to allow the engine to sit in the bay properly.

Mock up done and getting everything attached

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

These next images are disturbing..... I am sorry Joe it had to be done

So with moving the engine around everything had to be shortened to work.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Modifying the water neck to take the radiator cap

Image

Image

Switched the 410 diff out for taller gearing. This is from an Infiniti but is the same ratio as a TT Z and bolts right in.
Only thing we had to mod was the flange to accept the Z DS

Image

Image

Giving the block a final once over before getting the head back on

Image

BC 264 VVTI Cams

So at this point the engine and trans fit and we are able shift gears, which is a pretty big mile stone.

Finishing the 2J long block and painting the engine bay are next on the list. Things should start to come together very quickly after that. Hopefully it will start to look like a car again soon :)

Nice work so far! Do you have more pics of both Z's especially the vert...pre dismantle?

Progress has been slow and steady since the last update. The biggest hold up has been parts not fitting as advertised. If we were doing this over again going with the R154 trans would have probably made more sense. Live and learn.

Final prep before paint

Image

Image

Homemade paint booth in progress

Got the paint on....very pleased especially since it was my first time and it was really cold out

Image

I used a heater to in between coats to speed up drying times

Image

Image

Kind of felt like Bane during most of the painting process

Image

More Paint Shots

Image

Image

Image

After 5 coats of clear

Image

Image

Blocked off a hole that we no longer need in the radiator

Image

We went with a cheap-bay manifold. After getting the mating surfaces leveled at a machine shop and welding on a V-band it actually turned out really nice. Less than $200 all said and done.

Image

Image

Image

Starting to prep the plastic for paint

Image

Starting to look like an engine again

Image

Image

Image

V band welded on...was able to do a pass on the inside and outside

Image

Image

Boost :)

Image

Image

Image

And here is where the problems started......the adapter for the clutch was spaced incorrectly

Image

Image

This is the part that we had to fix

Image

Image

Image

One of my buddies fixing it for us......

Image

all done

Image

Fits now...

Image

and someone was so excited that they had to take it for a test drive.....

Image

Everything in!

Image

Image

Image

So at this point all of the major components are in. We still have to fab an exhaust and wire everything up. I am sure that there will be some bugs to workout as well. Regardless....we are in the home stretch.

Very nice!!! I can't wait to see the final product. I'm doing a 2JZ swap myself, so it's always interesting to see someone else do it too.
