I really don't have any problems with the brakes but these lights are driving me up the wall.

Where is the relay located? Pictures would be help full) what is the number? Will it turn off the lights off? Thanks 97 qq45

Most of the time, replacing the ABS Relay Unit (mounted on ABS Actuator, pax side) will fix the problem, but NOT GUARANTEED. The actual part name is RELAY ASSY-ACTU with P/N: 47605-4P00. It is a black assembly with 3 electrical receptacles. It's @ $30 from an Infiniti dealership.

I know you have a 97Q but you have to use the 98Q FSM since the 97Q FSM has limited chapters available.

As I have mentioned above, the ABS Relay Unit could be the problem but the lights can also be triggered by faulty wheel sensors, solenoid valves, etc. So it would be better to use the built-in diagnostic first so you don't waste your money changing parts unnecessarily. The diagnostic procedure is not difficult to follow.

Go to BR (Brake System) chapter of the FSM and then to page BR-47 to familiarize with the component location, including the ABS Actuator location and Data Link Connector. You need to connect Pin 4 of the Data Link Connector (do not confuse this with the 16-pin OBD II receptacle) to chassis GROUND to initiate the built-in diagnostic.

Go to pages BR 43-45 and look at the SYMPTOMS list. If you are familiar with electrical/electronics circuit, you can refer to pages BR 48-58 and look at the wiring diagram to get a better understanding of the ABS/TCS components interconnection.

For the actual diagnostic, go to page BR-59 and follow the procedure to get the malfunction code. Page BR-60 explains how to read the diagnostic code while page BR-61 correlates the fault codes with the affected components.

I hope it's just the ABS Relay Unit. The other components may be expensive.

Good Luck

On my 97 the relay is attached to the ABS module near the passenger fiewall and i bet its there on a 98 as well.

Paul, Condescending to new people is obnoxious from long time members who know something but it is intolerable from a kid.

Now that is what I call wealth of information! I apologize for being a "newbie" But I can't thank you enough for taking the time to truly explain in detail. Iwill try to replace the relay first. Then I will go thru the entire system using your advice and guidelines. THANK YOU !!

You have to a) Hold 10 Engineering degrees like Tech, or b) Remember when the forum was just one section (I don't) before you flame newbs like that. Especially this one, he was courteous and grammatically correct!

Hey - Call me stupid, but I can't locate this part # or desc on infinitipartsUSA using their search. I found 4 relays under Anti-lock brakes. There's a Modulator Relay, and 3 different relays under Traction Control - jideco, miyamoto, & niles. I'm assuming these are 3 different brands. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have been trying to follow the steps in the FSM to get to the code for my TRAC OFF/ABS/SLIP lights staying on and I couldn't figure it out. The only place that gave me a hint of what I was doing wrong was the above quote. I was foolishly trying to ground pin 4 on the OBD II, instead of Data Link Connector, which was 2 inches away under a cover. The problem is, now that I am using the right connector, I still can't get the codes after driving the car for 1 minute above 20mph. Turning ignition OFF (Not Lock), grounding pin 4 via copper romex? to bolt on engine and turning ignition on (not start). Still nothing. What is the best way to ground the pin? I'm at a loss.

Paperclipped the Pin 4 on top row and pin 9 and got code 12 and then code 16? The instructions were unnecessarily obtuse and non explanatory. It's like saying: "When in China, just ask for directions", without mentioning that you have to know Chinese, both to ask the question and to understand the response.
