guys im going to make my car a sleeper and I had the idea of widening my back steelies (as i like to call them) and using spacers to adjust for offset. Ill try to describe the welding process i have in mind: you get two extra steel rims and cut off both of the lips and the face of the wheel off. you would be left with a ring that you would want to be 1-3 inches wide (depending on how wide a tire you want to run). Then you take the steelies you are going to run on your car and just cut off the back lip (stay with me here) Then you take your 1-3inch wide ring, weld it to the back of the steely and then weld the back lip, back on. the result would be a very wide rim in back that would look "stock". You could even put hubcaps back on it.

Please tell me if this makes any sense and if it would be dangerous.

I am definetly not the expert, but I would think you would have some serious structural issues. If one of your new rings is not attached properly, say you hit a curb, then you are running a higher risk of your tire not being mounted to a good lip. Then your car will just be sleeping.

I would think that just adding stickier tires would do the same thing without all the welding.

Also, you may just be able to find a wider wheel off of another car.

Like I said I am not an expert on this.

You can order wider black steel wheels, it'd be much safer.

No way man that welding process you are describing will not work at all. there would be now way off a perfect wheel, you will have so man balance issues and all the vibration will worsen and could damage suspension parts over time. I strongly do not recommend doing this. And that welded ring will always be a weak point and will be VERY VERY dangerous!

not to mention messing with the bead mount points and probably not being true enough to allow proper eating and ballance...

Widening rims isn't a big deal at all , its very common with domestic guys that want to preserve the look of their rims but want bigger tires but you could get the same effect much cheaper buying circle track steelies from Summit or Jegs . Heh , a set of deep Nascar style wagon wheels would look kinda cool :ylsuper

There are tons of modified 4 cyl etc classes , so I'd have to assume so . I've never looked into it but I'm sure one of their tech people could find out exactly what would work .

all muscle cars came with 5 lug, sometimes even 6 lug. none of the wheels at summit would fit my car unless i got a 5-lug conversion.

If you are serious about cutting and welding, Cut the middle of the rim and widen it there. I think I've heard of this done. But ther HAS to be some other wheel that would work.

Remember don't get too wide of a wheel or you won't be able to perform in turns as well. Heres a thought, get a 5 lug conversion and bust out some 300ZX TT wheels they use 245s in the rear and 225s in the front. Im going to do a 300ZX NA wheels they use 225s all around with Toyo T1-S tires with a 5 lug conversion and upgraded rotors and 300ZX TT calipers along with other brake goodies. Very cool and very sleeper. I am looking more for Auto X performance.

Personally I won't do it (the cut and welding) but if you want the wide rims stuff get the 5 lug conversion and buy wider rims... I seen a 240 with 10in wide in the rears... but he also had 486hp to the wheels.... ;)

Nobody cares that the weight of these wheels would be immense?

I do, but I dont think, considering the safety and other problems, that weight really ventured into this discussion...so nya.-chet

well i have seen in summit magizine 4 lug steel rims. i believe they were 15x7 maybe 15x7.5 also. they were only like 60.00 per rim. i thought about doin this and puttin like 225 or 235 on tha back and 205 or 215 on the front but i dont know if the rims (15x7) would be too wide if u know what i mean

"bring it on b****, come on crack an egg on my head ill fry u an omlet"

Steel rims are sleeper?

Every time I see them they scream out to me "RICER!!" Trying too hard to look the part, and to be seen.

How the F*** are steel wheels ricer? Since I took off my ugly cracked hubcaps I'm a ricer? PLEASE keep tossing around that word were it doesn't apply.

2 things are getting more annoying than ricers...people labeling everything that way, and people into the "JDM" trend. GIVE IT UP PLEASE.

Also remember when you cut material you jepordize the structural integrity of the material ..... this spells disaster. Find OEM wheels off a 300ZX, works a lot better.
