Well, call me retarded for making a thread on this but its interesting to me...

I bought two oil changes because my headgasket blew and im going royal purple but first want a 'guinea pig' oil change to get rid of the milkshake first... so i bought two oil filters at o'reillys.

Got a K&N oil filter to go with the royal purple, and the 'cleanser' oil change is just Penzoil, so i just grabbed a cheapo. Turns out i grabbed an STP oil filter, and when i took it out of the box I almost crapped my pants, it was amazingly similar to the k&n!! im like, seriously?! I hold them up together... sure enough.

So heres the rundown...

K&N is defiantly stronger built on the outside... has a 1" nut on the outside for EZ removal, self lubed o-ring, box states 90% efficency of particle removal... $13

STP shares exact same base as k&n filter with self lubed o-ring, but doesnt have the nut on the back for EZ removal, construction is durable but not noticeably sturdy like k&n, and box states 96% efficency!!! paid a whole $3

Ten dolla difference is why im posting this! K&N is nice and all but if STP has the same filter system under that blue-coated surface, why ever buy POS fram??

Side by side pic comparison...

The outside of the filter means nothing dude.

Cut them open if you want to see which one is better.

sounds like you are mostly paying for the name. i honestly just buy whatever is on special. i get 5 quarts and a filter for like $17. every 4th oil change i just buy a filter since i have a spare 4 quarts. works out pretty slick. i wont get penzoil though since its garbage.

Fram is the real stuff to avoid.

Just buy a nice Bosch filter and you won't have to worry about anything. Pretty sure it's way less than $13 too. And Walmart Mobil1 full synthetic. $25 for four quarts. Can't beat it.

YouTube is your friend. There is a video of inside of pretty much every filter out.

As far as how good a filler really is, there are 3 areas to consider. The size of particles it can catch, it's construction, and the volume of particles it can hold till it starts to bypass.

purolator is best imo. But honestly I would not be scared to run pretty much any oil filter assuming I changed it on time and it has a drainback.

"You can't judge a book by its cover"

I usually use Mobil1 filters. I bought a K&N on my first oil change of tje sr just because of the EZ removal nut. On the KA I would grab the 5 quart jug of Castrol GTX high Mileage for 17 bucks. Never had any issues on both KA's I have owned, so I doubt Ill have any on the SR

Wait.. what? You mean 2 oil filters made for the exact same application are somewhat similar? No Way!

Purolator PL-20195

The only filter you'll ever need on a KA.

I'll have to direct MGE to this thread... All he does at work is play "which one of these will work on a Nissan" He's got some interesting filters that will work on 240s that are pretty big.

Filters are more than just what you see on the box man :rotfl .

I can already see the STP filter uses rubber o ring and inner seal... poopy.

Things that matter in a filter Imo are end cap and internal construction, filter material area and of course filtering ability. Polyurethane o rings and inner seals are better for holding oil inside the filter longer so you don't have a dry start.

Read this guy's take: http://www.300cforums.com/forums/genera ... ected.html

He found the super tech walFart brand is the same or identical to STP.
Frams are also garbage (except maybe the super duty whateverthefk theycall it) Who wants an oil filter internally made of cardboard or felt end caps? These are the things that secure the filtering element...

I have run purolator pure-one filters from day 1 on the SR. You don't have a custom oil pump or heavily modified nascar engine so I wouldn't worry about buying some tank of an oil filter like K&N or mobile1. BTW quick tip, mobile 1 oil now has zero zinc content and low ash iirc. Good for emissions, bad for old nissan engines. Unless you buy the turbo diesel mobil 1 oil your cam on bucket or cam on rocker engine won't get the proper love it needs :P. Royal purp or rotella oil ftw. Git it!

Oh, and I hope you learnded that you need to learnded more. Bobistheoilguy.com

Quick question though, how does an oem Nissan oil filter stack up against other filters?

Ok.

It's already being stated here, but you can't tell by merely looking at the outsides. Things like materials, "inner" construction and the number of pleats are where the differences are. Fram outright sucks by comparison; common knowledge. The outsides of most filters are going to be similar per application most of the time, with exception to groovy things like wrench-nipples ( I just made that up :chuckle: ) and anti-slip coatings.

... Yooz on drugz boi? :chuckle:

For the most part, automotive manufacturers will want to protect your investment as well as theirs. They won't be as bad as Fram, that's for sure. :chuckle:

Ok i've cut open a Mobil 1 filter and a Nissan filter. By far the Mobil 1 filter was much more "advanced" and seemed like it would hold a lot more crap, but the Nissan filter held up just as good, and I would recommend using either one, but money takes, so!

Puralator or STP are my main choices. I recently got a Mobil 1 filter on teh Slorolla and it works great!!

NO FRAM!! I don't care what tests have been tried. Oil starvation/nasty garbage = not having an engine very long. Don't ever put a fram on a Nissan the end.

No prob s13guy and all. Props for taking my advice so easily as I threw it at ya LOL. Man it's like people agree or listen around here now?
I did a lot of 'what oil and what filter is the best' research last winter for the hell of it. You can even find companies to test your old oil after a change to tell you how much of each metal is present, and by this you could extend your service interval if the contents are acceptable.

I love how the frams and cheapies don't even have a bypass valve... What if you forget to change the filter and it clogs? Oh that's right the cardboard end caps will just fall off and the oil will get through lol.

Now I just wish I could convince my girlfriend that Fram filters are teh suck too! I tried the whole 'book by it's cover' metaphor lol. I will sneak that link to her sometime :P
