Hey guys, I'm nearing completion of my S13 VH45DE swap, but my two main hurdles still remain:

Alternator setup...
I know Xcessive makes a bracket to use the Q45 alternator, but would like to see what you guys are doing. The main thing keeping me from buying that bracket is the fact that I do not have a good Q45 alternator... The one I have tests bad so I was thinking of using this brand new GM alternator from my last LS3 swap. Anyway, the the bracket being around $150 and a reman alternator being 100+ I would like to use what I have and spend a little less... Not really hoping to see someone using this particular alternator but would like to see what you are using.

Power Steering pump...
The tension rod bracket is in the way so I can't use the stock Q45 pulley. Also, how are you guys plumbing the system? Again, I know that Mazworx makes a plumbing setup and xcessive makes a smaller pulley and belt setup, but the cost of both together is another $300..

I plan on either going electric pump power steering or no power steering at all.

I think I have an extra vh alt. I'd let go for cheap.

I'm using the Excessive mount now.

No sway bar / frame clearance issues with the Xcessive alt mount? PM a price to me for the alternator shipped to 40383. I'll probably go ahead and snatch that up from you. Thanks!

I haven't put my sway bar back on since I got the excessive mount but I don't think there will be any issues.

The SW20 toyota MR2 uses an electric power steering pump. The hot rod guys really like them. I mounted my alternator up in the V- similar to where the VH41 has it (except higher as the 45 has different coolant passages)

Making the alternator mounting plates is easy- just use some card board to make templates and then cut out of thicker material once you have got it right.

if you do it yourself you can make brackets to fit any alternator you want!

What is your swap going in? I'm not sure that I'll have the hood clearance to top mount an alternator or not... Mine's going in an S13 and I'm trying to keep from making a huge cowl in the hood.

No way a top mounted alternator would fit an S13 without sticking through the hood.

Are you using this setup? I've been looking into this for the past couple of weeks.

No, I don't use the electric PS pump but i had an MR2 so know all about them. Very simple to setup and cheap to buy if you find someone wrecking an mr2.

Alternator sits lower than the top of the intake manifold on mine and could be made to sit lower if needed (just makes coolant pipes a little more cluttered.

as for the p.s. pump its the stock vh pump with a 93 sentra pump pulley and internal regulator. basically take the banjo bolt out of the pump and remove the pieces below where it bolts in. and there is a trick to the sentra pulley also. you have to bore out the back side of it to fit. the splines are the same, but the shaft diameters are different! :dblthumb: and the alternator bracket is totally custom but is in a similar location as excessive i think?

2 things,

what belt part # are you using?

and

Anyone try a ka24de/e pump? They are the same as the sr20 pump with a little larger pulley, but is still smaller than the vh45 pulley by about 1".

FLYINGBRICK!!! would you mind sharing more details on your setup?? thickness of the material measurements?? fabrication procedure?? did you just lay out some cardboard and then have it CNC'd? i am highly interested on your setup and if you don't mind sharing it would be awesome....also the weight of the alternator hanging back there not an issue?? or do you have like an extra bracket back there holding on to it?? thanks so much in advance!!

edit: also you may all call me stupid and say what u will.... but does anyone know if the a/c compressor will fit with no clearance issues in an s13??? it will be my daily... thats why i ask....

no problems. Its just 5mm thick aluminum. I'll get some pics of the finished setup soon.

I did the mockups with 1mm thick aluminum sheet that I just cut with aviation snips and bent by hand.

Really all you have to do is pull stuff to pieces and make up some cardboard templates then cut the final brackets out of aluminum with a jig saw.

I was worried about the weight of the alternator which is why i used so many of the available mounting bolts.

I may also put a bracket or two on the back going back to the manifold. Time will tel :-)

You can pick up a cheap saw like that for bugger all and then get a set of blades for cutting wood, metal and plastic.

Don't use one of your old mans expensive ones because if it sucks metal into the motor it'll die pretty fast.

Once you have a set of different blades you'll come up with all sorts of uses ( i cut my vehicles guards larger with my saw.. it went through both skins no problem and it left a real nice edge.
