i'm a fan of the agm technology. looks like the fill factor is greater--so i see no downside to the odyssey vs. redtop. heavier, yes due to more active material. the ody also appears more tolerant of high d-o-d more like a yello-top.qship, does this mean you intend to keep your G50 at least another 5 years?

Went back to Sears today... the 2 Platinum/Odyssey batteries they had on the shelf yesterday were already gone! So much for a hurting economy when $180 batteries are still selling that quick! They would have sold at least 1 more if they had it in stock!!!!!

My original intentions when purchasing the Q way back in 1999 were to keep it til it hits 300,000 miles so I have been aggressive with preventative maintenance using top quality parts/lubricants from the get-go. Currently at 214,000 and Q is operating like a 1 year old vehicle,so unless something really changes for the worse, I look forward to driving it another 84,000 miles!

Get a sealed battery. Sucks being stranded, low on distilled water.

When you do the Q45 preflight check every weekend to measure all fluids, isn't battery electrolyte a fluid? Stranded because of low battery fluid level? An imaginary thing that only occurs to BMW drivers.

I cannot understand how people can spend a lot of time discussing something that costs less than $30 per year prorated

Odyssey/Platinum and the Optima batteries are both Absorbed Glass Mat sealed batteries, no liquid swimming around in a big black flooded box like almost every other battery on the market to either leak or need refilling-ever. http://www.odysseyfactory.com

I don't want to jinx it but i have a 8 year old Infiniti battery in my 97' Q and it is still strong and looks nice and clean. I have never had a battery last this long ever.

When I lived in Phoenix from 88-91 my Z-car went through a battery every year practically. I think the heat and cold are the big killers, my Q lives in Half Moon Bay, CA which has little heat, never gets below 35, and the car lives in the garage...8 years, I didn't know a battery could go that long, but it starts the car well even after 2 weeks sitting in the garage! It has NEVER gone dead once, knock on wood.

Picked up and installed the Platinum P1 battery Yesterday, as I found one with a May 08 build date sitting on the store shelf. Engine turns over much faster while starting compared to the 36 month old OEM battery it replaced.

Being that the new battery is about 1.5 inches shorter in length than the original, I wrapped it with a Thermo-Tec/Cool It brand battery heat insulator kit instead of using the OEM plastic case that surrounded the original- it is suppose to reflect 90% of the radiant heat underhood and increase battery life by keeping it cooler- we shall see

Do most of you reinstall the oem plastic battery cover when switching batteries?

Well all the info on batteries can be gleaned from reading a few lines in Consumer Reports and then a new vocal expert is formed ? ? ?

Drag 'em over to a Q45 transmission discussion and then see the silence? ? ?

Just to update this thread for all the nay-sayers who posted in this thread.......the battery is about to celebrate its 6th year since installed......so far double the life of every other battery I have had in this old goat since new! Maybe some will put more stock in the consumers reports battery tests in the future........

Just an update to close out this thread......the Diehard Platinum AGM battery died today,at 80 months old and 96,000 miles of usage! So,in my usage and climate conditions,I got just over 2X the life out of this battery than every other battery ever used in my Q- and and since it came with a 100 month warranty,I got $39 credit towards a new replacement
Based on the age of my Q,I replaced it with a less expensive battery, the Diehard Gold, with a free 3 year replacement warranty, and 825 CCA and 140 minute reserve capacity. My assumption is that the Q will go to the junkyard before this battery dies,a sad thought!

good to know. I don't think sears has the P1 for sale anymore anyway.
Did the P1 AGM just up and die, or was it gradual? Did you ever give it trickle mx if the Q sat (at over 300k, you probably don't have it sit much....)?
I most recently bought the marine version April 2014. Still the best bang for buck in a group 34 battery. keep your old clip from the tray, the marine versions don't come with it.....
I purged the optima red top bought new in Nov 2006 in Oct 2010 from the Queen and put it in a lesser demand application (wife's odyssey) where it chugged happily until Nov 2014 and now it is in my standby generator, where it is pretty much on float charge until it needs to crank.
The Oct 2010 replacement was a P1 which is still in service.
I also have 2 AGMs from East Penn (USA made) that are in early service so no comments yet.

yes, they no longer offer the P1,but they do still sell a size 34/78 dual terminal model platinum { which gets mixed reviews due to the side terminals becoming electrically disconnected internally} along with the marine platinum you got.I couldnt justify getting another platinum at the late stage of life my Q is in.My Platinum gave zero signs of failure, was working like new, just wouldnt start one morning this week and that was it.Even though I drive the Q every day, occasionally I would connect the Ctek 3300 charger to it to be sure it was 100% charged, did this maybe every 2-3 months.Best battery I ever owned in almost 40 years of car ownership, hands down.
