I have been behind in the scheduled maintenance for the Rogue. The current mileage is 33K but i never went to the service department for the 30K scheduled maintenance. Is it necessary? I spoke to a service rep last time i was there and he quoted $800 dollars. Is it really necessary for perform the 30K maintenance or can i skip it?

Thanks.

could you be a little more specific with exactly what the "service" is for 30k?
my brother in law goes to the lexus dealer religiously for every "scheduled service" and gets raped, and every time its useless crap that doesnt need to be changed, or things that have not expired yet.

if you really wish to have these services performed, maybe call a local shop that has some history in your area and ask them how much it would be in total to do those services. im almost positive it might be cheaper to go with a local shop to do these services, versus a dealer. (just dont tell them how much nissan charges, and that its a "scheduled service" because they will realize you might be able to be taken advantage of)

Personally me, at 30k i would change the following items that dont get changed/checked regularly:
transaxle/transfer case fluid - replace
rear differential fluid - replace
cabin air filter - replace
spare tire air pressure - check
window wipers (front & rear) - check
engine air filter - check
transmission fluid - check
light-bulbs(exterior) - check
brake pads & shims - check, clean & re-lube as needed

Clean:
Windshield: take a good dish washing soap & water mixture and thoroughly clean your windshield to remove any oily deposits from the years of rainy highway travel. just make sure to not get dish washing soap on your painted surfaces as it strips wax very quickly.

Hey ImStricken, what about the fuel filter? I'm currently only @ 16,100 miles but I was wondering about your thoughts.

questionable if its even replaceable on this car. nissan likes to make their fuel pump & filter one piece, and not serviceable.

eeeeehh no. a filter for a sQuASH could be different due to ethanol difference in the fuels. when i remap the powercomanders on racebikes there are different maps for euro bikes and those running in the US because of the fuel difference. so the difference in the chemical makeup can certainly call for difference fuel filters.

i would call a nissan parts counter to see even if one is available. i know my maxima didnt have a serviceable fuel filter. nissan called a For Life filter that was never to be changed. it was apart of the fuel pump. i know guys that took it apart and found my mother in law inside, ooop i mean tons of filth inside lol. im certainly not the type to think something is "for life" but if its gonna be a ton of work or a ton of money, id rather just leave it, till it dies- or install an aftermarket Inline fuel filter.
PS: (i got 160,000+ on my maxima and never replaced the filter - and it was just fine, so i wont be worried in this car if its not serviceable)

I believe no current Nissan vehicle has a serviceable in-line fuel filter; it's just a sock or mesh type filter on the fuel pump itself. Pretty much the only time you'd replace it is if you replace the fuel pump.

And this would be where we get the expression "put a sock in it". :rotfl

Thanks for the info. I was a little puzzled that I could only find a filter (of sorts) for the Qashqai. Hmm, a permanent fuel filter, will wonders never cease.

My strong recommendation is to avoid the dealer maintenance packages, i.e. your "30k maintenance", and be familiar with the specific maintenance items that you need and want to perform. Dealerships create these packages and often push them as "required", when in reality they are full of "recommended" or "premium" items, and usually a thousand little check items that are mostly useless but this allows them to charge you big bucks.

I recommend following your manufacturer maintenance schedule closely and only ask your dealer service shop to perform the maintenance that is specified in this schedule, which will be very few items as the Rogue is a very low maintenance vehicle. If you want to go with some extra premium items such as disassembling, cleaning and lubricating your brake calipers that is great, but you need to be aware of each item and make the decision on what you want to have done. Don't just blindly do what your service department wants you to do because they will give you the full package and charge the heck outta you. The one that really gets me is the "inspect suspension, front end etc." - suspension will last you for many years and if something fails you'll notice it when driving right away, there's no need to pay an expensive shop to inspect this every few months, it's a complete joke (and a costly one to the owner)!

ImStricken has provided a good list of items that I'd reocmmend performing, just specifically list these items and tell your shop to give you a quote and do the work - they have no right to bully you and talk down to you and if they do, just tell them you'll be taking your car to another reputable shop that respects its customers.

According to the 2011 service manual the scheduled maintenance is:
Replace Oil/Filter
Replace Brake Fluid
Replace Air Filter
Replace Cabin Filter
Rotate Tires
Inspect: transmission fluid, suspension, brake components, diff oil, drive shaft boots, exhaust, fuel lines, steering components, transfer case (I lumped some together)

Optional Premium Upgrades:
Lube locks/hinges
Replace transmission fluid
Replace coolant
Replace diff oil
Replace drive belts
Replace rad cap
Replae transfer case oil
Replace wiper blades
Inspect all lights/adjust if needed

Without knowing what exactly they are quoting you on it's hard to say if $800 is a good price or not. I would however make sure you have all the scheduled maintenance items taken care of. Two places to save a little bit of money would be replacing the engine air filter and in-cabin air filter yourself. They should be pretty straight forward and I believe there is a thread that includes a video on replacing the in-cabin filter. With replacing those two components yourself I don't think the bill would be anywhere near $800 and you would meet all the recommend maintenance.

According to the 2011 service manual the scheduled maintenance is:

Replace Oil/Filter (only if it needs to be replaced - could have been replaced recently)
Replace Brake Fluid (not a bad idea, but not mandatory)
Replace Air Filter (only if it needs it - could have been replaced recently)
Replace Cabin Filter (only if it needs it - could have been replaced recently) - otherwise once a year or two is fine
Rotate Tires - (this service is performed free on many tire shops!)

Inspect:
transmission fluid - (not a bad idea.)
suspension - (if you dont hear squeaks, rattles, or clunks upon bumps , there is your "inspection")
brake components - (i did a write up if you think you can. many brake shops offer free brake checks!)
diff oil - (the most important part is cleaning the drain plug. but that requires draining. at 30k this fluid is gonna be nasty. i also did a write up for this as well. its beyond simple. this id like to see changed every 30k)
drive shaft boots - (CV joint boots are simple to check. turn the wheels and see the cone shaped rubber boots for tears, or grease leaking out. with the rear - just remove the tire and check the rubber boots at each end of each drive shaft)
exhaust - (if you dont hear a typical broken muffler or heat shield rattle - nothing else to check.)
fuel lines - (check your drive way every morning when pulling out for leaking oil, fuel, etc this is simple enough)
steering components - (does it work fine? if so - moving right along)
transfer case - (another write-up i did. its gonna be filthy at this point. this id like to see changed every 30k)

Optional Premium Upgrades:
Lube locks/hinges (take your key - dip it in grease/oil and insert it into the lock a couple times. done.)
Replace transmission fluid (optional, depends on inspection)
Replace coolant (no need - if its blue, its long life coolant good for almost 100,000)
Replace diff oil (DO IT! AT 30K ITS GONNA BE NASTY AND THE MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG FILLED WITH SHAVINGS)
Replace drive belts (IFFY. YOU CAN EASILY GET 50K OUT OF THEM)
Replace rad cap (WORTHLESS)
Replae transfer case oil (DO IT! AT 30K ITS GONNA BE NASTY AND THE MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG FILLED WITH SHAVINGS)
Replace wiper blades - DEPENDS HOW OLD THEY ARE. I REPLACE MINE EVERY 6MONTHS TO A YEAR
Inspect all lights/adjust if needed - YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF WITH A FRIEND.

Ah that looks more reasonable, I was confused why some were reporting their manufacturer's maintenance schedule was calling for CVT fluid replacement at 30,000 miles. My 2008 manual states "inspect CVT fluid", and doesn't require it to be changed until 60,000 miles which looks to be in line with what ImStricken has listed above.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to look up and list those specific items for us, things should be crystal clear now!

Correct me if i'm wrong. Beside the CVT fluids, I can bring the list over to a local garage guy or girl for them to perform the services for my car. Right?

-correct.

im really-really good with cars, and do all my own work - but CVT is something i wouldn't touch simply for warranty issues. NO ONE is touching my CVT unless its a nissan dealer. everything else, is free game and pretty straight forward.

I guess i need to replace all of the above. They were not replaced recently.
