Post

A long time ago I got a Drift Tengoku magazine that had a test about different wings' downforce on a S14. Pretty informative in my opinion.Over the years I have seen a lot of misinformation about wings being useless and just for looks.I decided to go through my old magazines (Drift Tengoku, Battle Magazine, Option, Option2 - 1999-2006) to find the article and "scan" it up just as some general knowledge for the 240sx community these days. I don't have a scanner anymore, so I used my camera phone.Anyways, here it is.

B wave style wing

Cusco GT wing

Cusco GT wing (different type)

Silvia wing

Here is the line graph they did for it. The vertical axis is the amount of downforce and the horizontal is for the speed.

and one more for a closer look at the results.

So, as you can see, wings DO something for your S14. Even the stock Silvia wing does a little (surprisingly!)

I hope this helps out somebody or just makes you go, "ohhh, interesting"

I'm pretty sure that "gray-ish" line is with NO wing.

That was very informative, thanks. Would the s13 compare about the same with the same wings or would it be different because of the body lines?

The only difference in the Cusco GT wings are the risers. The airfoil is the same on both. I still stand by my statement that "Wangan" wings are designed to reduce drag, not so much to produce down force. Classic example being any number of straight line trailer queens visible at any number of drag strips.

Interesting that both Cusco wings would apply that same amount of downforce at about 75 mph; 110 lbs.

Glad to know that having a wing, even at normal highway speeds do have an effect. Support my reasoning to buy the APR GT-200 drag wing I want.

Great post!

No wing will have the net effect of "reducing" drag. Adding a wing will always increase drag, it just so happens that, if chosen correctly, the increase in downforce makes it a worthwile trade-off.

You might be right, upon closer inspection, the first on looks like the 3D carbon, and the second the Type 2.

3 kg is 6.6 lbs. Not bad for a stylish OEM wing.
