So I picked up my car from the shop today and they couldn't change my turbo gaskets etc due to the fact my heat shield bolts were a bit rusty. So I was wondering since my engine is stock, just tuned, do I have to keep the heat shield on for any reason or can I take it off and drive like that, or am I at risk of melting anything. I just want it out the way. Thanks

IMO it is important to keep it on. It helps the heat stay on the hot side of the turbo. Taking it off could melt your hood insulation, or the oil drainback hose near the turbo. I'd get some reflector tape and put it where you notice hot spots in the bay.

I haven't had mine on since probably 05 or 06 and never had an issue with the factory turbo. My BMC has never had an issue, my hood insulation is fine, and no paint is peeling or showing signs of heat cycling. I pulled mine because 2 of the bolts snapped off in the manifold, and I couldn't reinstall it securely. If you can try to keep it on, do so.

You can remove it - we ripped 'em off 50+ swaps and never had any heat problems with a stock turbo.
