89 240sx ka24e stock auto
starts fine cold and idles perfectly but as soon i put it in drive(with the brake applied not moving) the idle drops alot and sometimes bogs. If i release the brake and actually drive the power feels very unstable and surges, so like i get alot of torque and it feels normal for like 1 second then the other second it loses alot of power plus the exhaust tone changes accordinglyt so it may be missfiring and it also will backfire out the exhaust when i release the gas.
But as soon as the car warms up and goes into closed loop it runs fine which is why im confused and am wondering if it could be some sort of sensor problem, i haven't pulled any codes but i may be able to do so tomorrow but any ideas?

did this just happen or you did something before it started doing this? check your ignition wires and plugs and definitely check for codes in mode III and V

it sounds like it might b ur O2 sensor.
I had a similar problem, with sudden loss of power and low idle but i got it checked and my O2 sensor and my Idle sensor were bad.
also check your wires. look at the ends of the wire that go into the engine block, over the spark plugs. if the tip of the wire has a yellowish color it means that some of the spark is escaping and could be causing a misfire.

the plug wires are fine and i imagen if the spark was grounding out on the block it would not matter if its cold or warm.

O2 sensor is definately a possiblity i've only had the car for about a year and its got ALOT of problems from neglect of the previous owner which is why i came here to ask as anything is possible. I will hopefully be starting a new job soon so i'll replace the o2 sensor asap.

How about the Coolant temp sensor? mines covered in all kinds of fluids from a PS leak and a blown upper rad hose
