I got rear ended for two times and had hail damage. After the rear ended collisions, the guys at the body shop "hammered" the metal joints to flatten them. So these rubber hammers left marks and scratches. To access the behind of the rear quarter panels to PDR the hail damage, they removed most of the plastic trims. They scratched the trims a lot (especially when trying to re-install the car jack). So I decided to paint the inside of the spare tire area.

I was hoping to:
- Have a rough, durable and nice finish for the plastic trims (under the cargo floor)
- Cover all the scratches
- Improve the sound absorption (hoping to reduce the splash noise when the road is wet)
- RTV the joints to solve water leakage problem
- Hide that ugly tan-coloured joint sealant, applied by the fingers of a Japanese technician (or his kid) :chuckle:

I used this product:

I removed the two large trim pieces from the trunk, the spare tire and the cargo floor. I sprayed the trims outside.

I masked all the velcro parts (for the small lids) and surfaces where the cargo floor sits on (I don't want the carpet/felt texture of thefloor to stick on rubberized surface. As you can see in this close-up, I put 1" washers, because the mechanics enlarged the hole while installing the trims back:

Final (before installing the spare tire back):

I didn't paint the surfaces where the sidewall of the spare tire rest on.

Result:

-I think it looks amazing.
-I prefer that textured black finish to light gray scratched paint.
-It covered all the scratches on the trim pieces.
-The water leakage problem solved (even after heavy rain falls).
- I stinks for three days
- The noise problem is still there.

very cool idea. it will certainly calm down the vibrations and squeaks coming form the rear. i RTV'd a lot of plastic trim (almost everything that touches something else) and it calmed down vibrations A LOT!

Thank you ImStricken. The proper way for noise reduction should be using something professional like DynaMat. But it was just a small weekend project. To be honest, the primary reason was to fix the water leakage and hide that tan-coloured ugly looking sealant. I hate the look of it from day one.
