So I recently broke a rocker arm on my s14 sr20 blacktop from hitting the rev limiter at 7600. Took the VC off and saw it was number two exhaust side. The rocker was actually broken in half. Right when it happen I drove off the road and didn't drive since. When I took it apart I didn't see any other damage, not even any scoring on the cam lobe. Replaced the rocker and put in Tomei rocker stoppers to stop the problem from happening again. Put everything back together and started it and still the same symptoms, misfire on cylinder 2, tapping sound. Vacuum reading is right where it is normally so I don't think my valves are bent. I've been told that the lifter bleeds down without a rocker being in place for a long time (10 days for this case) and that they take time to refill with oil. I've ran the car for a total of 5 -8 mins and still the same. I even tried just cranking it without the injectors plugged in for 10 second periods every 10 mins for about 40 mins and still the same. I've been told that maybe a shim adjustment is in order for that lifter, but the lifter I installed was 100% brand new so I figured it degas more material than my old rocker and would be ok with the same current shim. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be appreciated.

Any ideas? At this point I'm going to take it back apart and manually fill the lifter up with oil, if that doesn't work then ill have to start looking into shims

if the lifter is collapsed then it can still make alot of noise. changing the lifter may be a smart idea...

Try pulling the lifter out and bleeding it. Stick it under some oil and use a long, thin punch to pump the check valve inside a few times to express all the air. Once it's bled, put it back in, and hopefully your tapping should be gone. But in my experience, SRs just tend to have a lot of head noise since the lifters will eventually start to get air in them over time. The only way to really solve it is to swap out for solid pivots and scrap the hydraulics.

There is an FSM procedure to hold the engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes to bleed the air out of lifters. I recall having it work great several times in the past. Might want to try that before taking things apart again.

Good luck!

The SR lifters aren't a self bleeding type, you have to pull them out and manually bleed them (because of the check valve)

^^ Nope. Check the FSM. They can and do self-bleed but it does not always work. I have personally done it several times.

EM 46 of the S14 SR manual, "Air cannot be bled from this type of lash adjuster by running the engine." The procedure in my S13 manual is also the same as the S14, remove them and bleed them manually. I'm not doubting that you've done it, 'cause I've seen quite a few things in my time that are said not to work by the manufacturer, but it does anyways. Where in the manual did you read that it was possible?

I'm trying to figure out where it is - it's been 6+ years..... I clearly recall seeing it in printed text in a Nissan FSM somewhere. If I find it I will post, but it only takes 2 minutes so might want to give it a try.

We started 80+ fresh SR swaps over the years and very noisy valve train on first startup was so common so we had a few tricks that helped.

Edit: Well, I can't find it in any SR FSM's. Sorry for the mistake. Back in 2002 I got it from somewhere, maybe my machine shop guy - he was like a half-Wizard half-robot in my eyes! Perhaps it only works when the lifters are already almost full, not dry.

Anyway, good luck with it I hope it works out!

i guess not bleeding it and then runing the car actually caused it to stick
