I decided to give a redline goods product out for a spin,
as seen here:

and a thread by the hitman himself:

As easy as it sounds, this took a bit of time. Parts of the process included the weird feeling that you were just about to crack the mounting ring.
I give this a 2/10 Easy rating.
Tools needed: Philips Head
1. Pop center console out with your hand. Unplug the ribbon wire of a/c controls.
2. Remove the shiftknob (
zerothread/408283-diy-swapping-the-oem- ... -shiftknob)
3. Introducing my new shift boot, made from faux alcantara. Has orange and gray stitching to match the theme of the Z.
4. Remove all screws on the bottom of the mounting ring.
5. Disconnect the shift ring from the mounting ring. (one of the more annoying parts. The clips are tiny as hell)
6. Pry the boot off the ring.
7. Since the new boot is custom fit it should match up perfectly to the ring, to skip the direction confusion of what goes where just find the 4 holes and match it up to the 4 studs on the ring. The opposite side should have only 2.
A) For the holes which line up with the clips, you need to poke a pencil or pen through them to help give the clip more clearance.
8. If you turn the old boot inside out, you'll notice the collar is still inside. I did not reuse it, but you can if you really want to. Putting it back on is a pain in the a**.
9. Put everything back together and you are set.** careful when mounting the ring and boot ring back, if you find yourself having trouble with matching up with the screws, it could possibly be that you put the ring upside down. (I did, it took a while to figure out )
