Hi everyone,

I have a 98 I30 with a drive axle that is clicking and a wheel bearing that is allowing the right front wheel to move slightly. How easy are they to replace myself and do I need any special tools? I have worked on engines but not anything to do with driveshafts. Any suggestions.

Thank you

Dave

Its not as difficult as it seems.

Get a Chiltons or Haynes guide, but if you can get a Factory Service Manual.

The biggest thing you will need is a press to get the bearing in and out.

With some buddies of mine it took me a few hours to do.

Read the guide well before starting and it will be easy.

Just remember to take out one half axle then replace it, then do the other side. if you dont it will trash your tranny.

Here's an easier idea.

Go to http://www.motorvate.ca

This guy has tutorials and pictures.

He even devised a method of pressing the bearings without a hydraulic press.

"Mentos...The fresh maker"

Sorry I couldn't help it. I was just going to do the , but it reminded me too much of the Mentos commercials. Actually, it reminds me of the Orbit gum commercials too...minus the mud all over it's face.

I would get new CV joints. You can rebuild but it lookspretty tricky and time consuming. I had some friends whotried rebuilding them and they fell out at Jack in the Boxon a 96 Maxima

You are going to want to replace the transmission seals tooif the CV joints go in like the 1995 ir 1996 maxima!!

Check your brakes while your at it and get that done if needed.

If your power steering needs adjusting it is a good time to do thattoo, as well as changing hoses, degreasing etc.

Since the Nutria-loving fiend added, I just remembered something.

GET AN ALIGNMENT!!!

Replacing the CV axle and axle bearing requires taking your suspension apart. In doing so, you will disrupt the alignment.
