Is it possible to remove the catalytic converter without damaging the engine's performance. I own a 1998 nissan pathfinder

Removing the cat should not hurt performance--just the opposite. It'll free up the exhaust flow. Gains will be small, but it shouldn't affect the engine's operation negatively. The downside is that you won't be able to pass emissions inspections.

Maybe your check engine will turn on. But it will still perform normally.

Your '97 QX4 has two catalytic converters and two oxygen sensors.

If you remove either a cat or an O2 sensor, you'll likely get multiple engine codes.
