its no bolt on.. for the 25 it requires drilling out the lower hole, grinding down a little bit of the block, and chopping the **** out of and redrilling the stock bracket.. this is to retain the stock 25 belt.. might get away with a slightly longer one... then you will have bracket issues..

93-95 quest 110 alternator, bolts to block with enlaged mounting holes will need a modded bracket for proper mounting.

Carl Is that the standard practice on ALL Rb's? I'd be swapping it on a 20.

Didn't you get an alternator with your motor? If so, it will probably be just as easy to drop it off at an auto-electric shop to be rebuilt. It uses a Mitsu regulator so it should be easily rebuildable for a comparable price to that of a new one.

For the 20 guys, there is no welding required for this swap. I have done it twice know with good results. I will try to get some pics from one of the cars I did(rb240det and jdm80boi). All you need is a peice of steel 2x3/4x1/8 and some nut, bolts and washers. Of coarse you will need a drill and some method of cutting the plate. Drill a hole in either end of the plate and bolt it to the bracket, Then bolt the other end of the plate to the alternator. From there, just clearance the bottom mount and you're done. I know this is useless without pics but you should be able to get the jist.

Did you even bother to read all through this thread?? Scroll up and look at CarlH's reply he already said which alternator to use... Unless you had a more specific question but "what alternator" was answered twice in here already.

I know this is an older thread but it seems like a good place to post this so people can find it easy.

I used an alternator from 1996 Nissan Quest.

Instead of chopping up the stock alternator bracket I decided to make an adapter that would allow me to still use the belt tensioner and give me the option to go back to the stock RB25 alternator. I had to enlarge the lower mounting holes on the alternator. But I didn't have to modify the block or the alt bracket.

I basically welded two angle pieces together and drilled two holes. I'll try and get a better picture soon, but all I had at the time was my camera phone.

BTW: I'm still new to welding

Interesting methodology! I enjoy seeing all of the different ways everyone has devised solve this problem!

PS, I'm getting ready to install a Quest 110a also

Here's another option for those with no welder or fab skills.

I happened to have an alternator from a 93 j30 an noticed that it was very similar to the one on my rb20. As a bonus it's a 90 amp alt. I'm actually mocking this up as I type. Just took a break to give a heads up. So far so good. RB20 front cover fits pefectly and everything bolts up if you remove the spacer from the rear lower mounting hole. I've adjusted the belt and looks pretty good. Belt/pulley alignment is out by 2 or 3 degrees but not bad at all. I'll have pics and all as soon as I get it perfect.

I know it's not as B.A. as the Quest alternator but it's 10 amps better than stock and it looks like it's gonna be a pretty direct swap that anyone can do. Updates soon!

**Update**

Put everything back together, adjusted belt and BAM. Looks like its gonna work. At this point I have not had to modify the bolt holes other than taking out the press in spacer for the rear lower bolt hole and swapping the front cover onto Belt / pulley alignment is still just a hair off but I doubt seriously that it will hurt anything.

The engine should be back in the car this weekend. After I drive it and am sure everything meshes, I'll post a write up & pics if that would be helpful to anyone. Damn, I just looked at the pics of the Quest Alt. If it's a mitsu alternatorm I wonder i the front cover could be swapped on it to. HHmmm. off to the salvage yard tomorrow.

Oh. Well, I hadn't seen one in person. I was just going off the pics in this thread. I dunno, just a shot in the dark.

That's o.k. I'll take my free, bolt on, 10 amp upgrade.

I was just hoping that this info might be able to help someone out in a pinch. If anyone does decide they'd like me to do a wright up, just let me know. I'd like to be able to give a little back for all the help I've gotten from this forum.

Sorry to dig this corpse up, but looking online, the 93 J30 Alt is the same as the 1994-1996 300zx alternator.

Did you ever get the J30 all hooked up and working? Was it true bolt in without any welding, just the cover swap?

An update would be great, I am looking to upgrade to something that doesn't require welding.

Or does anyone know of a way to get the quest alt in without welding brackets?

I bet if you made it worth somones wild they would make one for you if you sent them the old one. I used to work at a shop with a welder, so it was simple. I might have a spare bracket if i do then i will make one for you and then you can send me some money for it(my buddies grandpa has a couple differnet welders).
