1997 Q45 . . . Instrument lights went out last night -- stereo lights very dim. Thought the alternator was going, but my headlights were bright and the car ran fine. Is this a fuse issue?

Not sure on that - I would certainly check them... what happens when you move the dimmer switch?

Try the rheostat (dimmer switch first).

It might need to be convinced (gentle tapping) to continue to make contact.

It is a variable resistor basically acting as a load by sweeping a contact arm over part the circuit with variable resistance over time they can wear out and intermittently go out.

My J needs a few taps about once a month.
