Well seeing as how I have finally gotten started and am actually making something resembling progress on this thing, I guess it is time to start a build thread.

Thankfully I had a wrecked and gutted s14 shell sitting around the yard to use to make mounts and figure out what I am going to have to massage (i.e. pound the f*** out of with a hammer) to make this large engine and its fat stumpy transmission fit in the car. This also means that I don't have to go without my car, and I can continue to enjoy the 400 hp sr that is currently living under the hood.

Well here it is in all its 8 cylinder, 4 cam, 5 liter, and 412 hp glory hanging from the cherry picker in its approximate mounting location.
Image

Fire wall clearance, I would prefer that it sits a little farther back but the fat a** transmission had other plans... the brake booster also had some objections but then I tossed it in the scrap pile, so it looks like I will be swapping to a non-power brake setup.
Image

The engine just peaks over the top of the structure that resides under the fenders.... means that I should be able to run a stock hood, sweet. :dblthumb:
Image]

A simple small bracket to sit the engine about 1.5 inches forward and 1.5 inches higher than the engine mounts on the cross member should do the trick to lock the engine in place. The stock headers outlet flanges are to wide to fit between the frame rails and I doubt that any off the shelf headers are going to fit, so getting a custom set made is on the list of stuff to do.

Lots of room between the sway bar and oil pan.
Image]

Hmmmm...... I still need to make the oil pan shorter, by the time I am done with this damn thing there will be very little original metal left on it, I should have just cut it down to the mounting flange and started from scratch.
Image

Got about half an inch between the bottom of the pan and the steering rack. Now I just need to make a new bottom for the back half of the pan.
Image

With as fat as this gt500 tr-6060 transmission is I was still able to get it to tuck up nicely in the tunnel, but there is still some pounding to be done to make sure that there is enough clearance so that nothing bangs around before I start to make a mount for it.
Image

That's where it sits right now and probably will be for the next week or 2 as I don't get much done when I am on day shift at work, but don't panic I will be back with updates as there is still lots left to be done to finish mounting the the engine and a couple of thing to do to my car to get it ready for this thing, so stay tuned. :bigthumb:

Good start. Have you considered trying to find engine hugger headers? They're designed for tight fit applications and simply run "shorty" style headers very close to the block. If they work, it'd probably save you a good bit of coin compared to going out and having a set custom made.

Small update!

I decided that being able to run the stock unmodified hood is for little girls, so I pick up a boss 302 manifold............ it should also be good for about 30 extra horses with a tune. :fruit:

Forgot my camera so I snapped a few pics with my phone to show my progress for a quick update:

I got the engine in the car and bolted in place:

I also put the boss manifold in place:

hood clearance......I has none....... completely worth it.

I still need to do a little clean up work and permanently weld the motor mount adapters together and the engine mounts will be done. (will get pics of those tonight as I finish them up) I also need to get a stock gt500 transmission mount so I can modify/make a cross member. Once that is done I will be in a holding pattern until I get the funds up to start getting parts to modify the brakes and power steering on my car, or get a set of headers made.

I haven't had that much time to work on this thing recently as getting my bike ready for this year has taken up most of my free time along with maintaining some form of a social life.

I did manage to find a stock gt500 transmission mount in between all the other crap that required my attention and was able to get started making a new cross member to hold the transmission in place today.

Passenger side, need to get some nuts to hold the plate to the transmission mount so I can start to form the plate around the mount. I also didn't have any 3" wide 1/4" plate so I had to use some 4" wide stuff. Its not all bad, as I will need something to attach some exhaust hangers to when it comes time to start making an exhaust.

Image

Driver's side, the bottom of the plate is just about even with the bottom of the frame rails, I guess I am going to have to trim down the studs on the mount so I don't leave 2 grooves in every speed bump I cross.

Image

I snapped some pics of the motor mount adapters I came up with, these were the best solution I came up with that would allow me to run off the shelf mounts(stock replacement 03-04 cobra mounts), bolt it on without modifying the cross member, and still get the engine to sit as far back/low as possible. The stud on the cobra mounts is 1 3/8" forward of the slot in the cross member and the adapter adds 1 1/4" to the height of the cross member.

Don't mind the rough edges, those will be cleaned up before they are painted and put into service.

Also got a couple of pics of the room I have for headers...... it will be tight (especially on the driver's side) but there is enough room to stuff some long tube headers in there. :bigthumb:

Passenger side:

It is difficult to hold a shop light and keep the camera steady while in a half way sit up position, lol.

Wow, I am impressed. :dblthumb:

The coyote 5.0 is a badass engine.. and I personally love it (in my mustang)..

That BOSS IM looks great, and I'm sure you will love the 7500 revs too...

Interesting choice with the TR6060... though I dont blame you for avoiding the MT82..

I am interested in seeing how the different gearing runs with the NA 5.0...

Honestly, one of the main driving factors behind the boss intake manifold was the ability to spin the engine another 600-700 rpm, and make more power while doing it.

I am curious as to how the tr6060's gearing will fair as well, but I figure that with a stock 4.08 ratio and the fact that the car that the engine is going in will be about 500 pounds lighter than the car it came from, I don't think that I will have to much to worry about.

The transmission mount is done other than adding some gussets for additional strength and for my own piece of mind.

I forgot my camera yesterday so I didn't get any pics of actually making the transmission cross member, but I snapped a few today before I got started finishing it up.

How I left it yesterday:

The finished product minus the gusseting and trimming off the extra material on the rear of the crossmember:

Definatly going to need to shorten these up a little bit:
Image

Next thing on the to do list is to make the oil pan shorter, add some extra capacity and close up the massive gaping hole that is the back half of the pan.
Image

That's it for now, but I am going to try to to get a little more done this weekend, so stay tuned! :dblthumb:

Generally awesome.

With that eventual boost, do you mean supercharged? Or do you envision being able to stuff a turbo and turbo manifold down there?

I am hoping to be able to squeeze a turbo or 2 in there, but if that doesn't prove to be feasible an eaton or whipple setup will, as the hood is already going to have to be modified for the boss intake.

But, all of this subject to change as an itb setup, some big lumpy cams, and a rev limiter somewhere in the stratosphere would make good power and be incredibly entertaining.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get anything done since my truck decided that it wanted to become a 7500 pound paper weight last sunday, it also decided that $800 of the $1000 I've been putting aside for braking up grades to my car would be better spent fixing its sorry a**. :bang

Once the truck is out of the way I will be able to get back on the extensive oil pan rebuild, and then move on to figuring out how to twist and bend some pipes into a set of headers that won't try to occupy the same space as the steering shaft.

Sucks when stuff like that happens.

Where did you find the 5.0? And, how much was it, if you don't mind me asking.

This particular one one has a cracked ring land on #8 so I got it for $900, I bought if off a guy in northern VA that pulled it to make room for the replacement. I'm Not sure if I am going to rebuild this engine or just part it out and try to recoup that initial $900 so I can put it toward a crate engine from ford racing.

Long time no post........ but I have updates, just none of the updates have anything to do with making an oil pan or a set of headers.

Well, while cruising ebay for some q/ttz spindles and axles I happened across this gem:
Exremly nice 2005 Q45
Image

Well, I managed to pick it up for $6900, and after the cost of the trip to get it, an oil change, and a brake job I had about $7300-$7400 in it. So I put it up for sale for $10k odo, well after a week I got a wild hair up my a** and ended up trading it in(got $9k for it to) to get this old thing:

Image

Well, now that I have a new rwd manual dd(/small side project because I won't be able to resist doing some basic stuff to it) that is fun as hell to drive and quick enough to keep me entertained, my 240 is coming off the road and the sr is going to be pulled out and sold to make room/monies to continue getting the coyote in the car and running. Big emphasis on the monies part since the vast majority of the money I had saved went into that q and then to the gto.

I should be able to get back to business and get an oil pan done and a set of headers mocked up soon........I hope. :gapteeth:
