Hello all,

Question, I've got a 1991 Q45, and low on Power Steering Fluid, if I'm correct,
it uses standard Dexron ATF for the Power Steering Fluid, right?

All the best,
Vin

Since there is no cooler, M1 ATF is a better choice. BG makes a synthetic fluid also, and a seal conditioner.

According to Infiniti, Dexron-II (Dexron-III is compatible and readily available) or Matic-D is factory fill. Maxnix is right, though. You're better off w/ a synthetic fluid. Many are not aware of this, but when you hold the steering wheel at full-stop, the fluid temp raises 30 deg for every second you're maxed out. Synthetics are far more thermally stable, so they're definitely the way to go. Mobil-1, Redline, BG, and Amsoil are all fine choices.

Thanks for the good advice guys, and now I have a couple more questions!

Regarding ATF in AT's, I've heard that it's not good to mix old Mineral with New Synthetic, and in fact, even heard that if you have never changed your ATF, you are better off keeping the old fluid in there, than to refill it with new stuff and "shock" the system.

Regarding AFT in Power Steering, is it ok to mix Synthetic, with the old stuff that
has probably never been changed?

I've also heard that you should never hold the Steering at Full Lock, it also builds up more pressure in the lines, and so I do not do that.

All the best,
Vin

1.) Flush and refill every 2 years. What possible good could old contaminated fluid be?

2.) No old stuff!

3.) You have to to purge the system correctly! RTFM!

Finally, there is a PS cooler for the Z32, it might be a NISMO part.

I wouldn't let your concern about mixing the two ATFs (new synthetic vs. old non-synthetic) stop you from exchanging your fluid. Ideally, you would have a shop do a full exchange with a flush machine that captures the old fluid as it's pushed out by the new fluid. If you don't want to spend the money for that, I would suction as much as possible out of the tank with a suction tool or turkey baster. Then refill it with cheap ATF (supertech from walmart comes to mind) every day for a week or two. Then repeat with Mobil 1.

That way you're transitioning from old standard fluid, to new standard fluid, to fully synthetic fluid. The system doesn't hold that much fluid, so that would be a very inexpensive way to accomplish it. I just change mine out with every oil change, after the initial flush.

Here's a picture of some Valvoline Power Steering Fluid below. I accidentally found it as some parts store fluid for flushing the system. I like it being clear so I can easily see any contamination.
