Woke up this morning to hear this lovely sound. Seems like it's one of the belts, but I am not sure which one. I did change one of the belts a few summers ago so I am not sure if it would go bad that fast. Any ideas and if it is one of the belts, is it ok to drive on at least until I can get it fixed? Thanks.

Sounds horrible to me too. I am guessing, but that sounds internal and not a belt. The off beat sound is throwing me off. If it increases with revs it could be a belt , but it sounds like a cylinder missing due to a valve problem. Is it firing on all cylinders or is it missing? Without actually hearing and driving it the first thing I would do is check your oil level and make sure it is full. Could be a ton of different things. Take it to a mechanic and don't drive it with that sound.

OMG, that's a terrible sound! I've never heard belts sound like that. I also think it's an internal issue.... Wow... Good luck, man!

WOW. I've messed with the vq35 engines for along time and heard a lot of things, but not this. Like others have said it sounds internal like maybe a valve. I've seen one instance where the car made this noise and that's when a screw from the butterfly of the throttle body came off and went into the engine. but that was on a 5th gen maxima with the vq engine

by chance how was the car driving prior to you hearing the noise??

prolly low or no oil which may have caused excessive internal damage...tow it to a mechanic.

good luck bro!!

It's been driving fine. I know I am way over due for an oil change and when I check the oil last night, it was at the end of the lowest marker. Dumb on my part to not have gotten it changed.

You think it maybe a sparkplug misfiring? Or a cylinder problem. I dont think a belt would do any problems like that

I am not sure, I have never heard anything like this before. I guess I will be looking to get it towed as soon as I can.

Try taking the cover off and see if you can isolate the noise better.

I asked a good friend of mine who is an infiniti service manager and this is what he msged to me
"i would rec to first add oil!! these dipsticks are hard to read and people often mis read them. if the noise still does not go away, take the belts off and start engine to see if a tensioner is bad or idler pulley. if the noise is still there, possible timing chain noise, maybe one of the plastic guides wore off and chain is slapping, is there a cel, running rough?"

Will add some oil tomorrow and let it run for a bit to see if it goes away. If that doesn't work, i'll be having it towed to the shop if I can't see anything from the surface wrong. I don't have a garage at my disposal to work in which sucks and with work and temps around 30 degrees here, there won't be much work done by myself on it.

Got to the shop and it was......a bad belt lol. The AC belt had split in half, half away around the circumference of the belt which was the sound in the video (the split part was off the pulley hitting things). All new belts, oil change and $260 later, the M is running like a champ. Thanks guys for all your help

Hey,,, thats good to hear I had a similar problem with noise , the only difference was that for me it was happening only when slightly touching gas pedal and revving at 800 - 1200 rmps only with warmed engine...
Your sounded louder than mine but still it can get frustrating not knowing what it can be. Noise is a bi*ch & travels everywhere. My problem was isolated by replacing belt tensioner.
