Modifications for 2010 have started.

We recently had Alamo Autosports in Arlington, TX renew their commitment to the project which is HUGE! Brice Yingling and his crew will be helping with all manner of upgrades this year including tuning. The motor, as you know, was built to handle well over 500HP, and we'll inch up on those numbers as the year goes on. Right now we're at 320hp @ 10psi, with leaky headers and all. Anxious to see what fixing the leaks does without making any other changes.

The first order of business was to fix the multitude of exhaust leaks that plagued the system last year. I ditched the multi piece long tube headers and used the pieces to fab a new unequal length short tube header:

I think they came out OK for my first set of headers. They aren't perfect, and they probably won't be all that efficient. But they'll flow great and won't leak, which is better than they were before.

There it is. I'll post some pics after they get TIG'd and coated. I'm also re-doing the exhaust pipe back to the turbo and using V bands for all the connections. Should be good and tight, and most importantly, leak free!

Thanks, of course, to NICO. I appreciate the front page article on last years effort and look forward having you with me at the 2010 race!Bye.

You are correct, Sir!

The STS remote mounted turbo system worked flawlessly. And without all the leaks it'll work even better.

Stay tuned!

Whoa! I knew you were KA-T, but I had no idea that was the route you went! I wanna stop by Alamo and see this thing sometime!

Gonna bring the heat to Rhys and his mid-engined V8 Genesis this time around?

I saw this on FA and just assumed it was supercharged. Why the remote mount?

Mid engined V8 Genesis?? The car he ran in 2009 was a FR V6 TT...Did he make a change?

I'm pretty realistic...I don't have the experience or the talent to beat Rhys. He gets up every day, eats breakfast and gets in his race car...I get up every day, get my kids to school and go sit in my cubicle.

What I expect is to make the summit on race day and better my time from last year. My car needs more pavement. I struggle in the gravel sections...

There's a few benefits to the remote mount:1. cooler engine bay - gets the heat away from critical stuff.2. cooler turbo - it's farther away from combustion so it runs cooler.3. ambient intercooling - the charge pipe from the turbo to the engine bay gets cooled along the way so I can use a smaller intercooler.

There's more to it than that, technical stuff that I don't fully understand...what I do know is that it works really well.

Okay now I know the benefits but what the hell is a "remount mount" turbo because I'm seeing headers and reading 320hp@10psi and going

The turbo is back here...in the back seat behind the passenger. It's in a box with a hi-temp liner, so the passenger gets no radiant heat from it, and the noise (with a helmet on) is negligable.

Here it is from underneath:

You can see all the build photos here:fatmanracing.com

Do a search on YouTube for: Fatman Racing (in one of the videos you'll hear them yell for Travis...he's my co-driver and the first Quadriplegic to compete in the Hill Climb)

There it is...
chaosli wrote:turbo along the exhaust but not in the engine bay

Nope. Air moves through the system at over 400ft per second. The turbo is only 10 ft from the intake and the system is always pressurised. So lag is negligable (thousandths of a second vs a std. turbo config).

Even with all the leaks we had in the system it still worked really well.

Bye.

Lol! Thank you so much for being a real guy! Cubicle work pwnz me too!

But yeah... Rhys' new beast of a Genesis supposedly has 500hp from 8 cylinders and ITB's.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Alamo got the new header welded up and I got it back in the car yesterday. Also fabbed up the new exhaust pipe back to the turbo. In all I found 6 major leaks in the system and another 9 minor leaks. Too many, no matter how you slice it. Once I get it all sealed up I'll go for a test drive and see if I can feel a "seat of the pants" difference. Should be considerable with all the leaks we got rid of! Got a great deal on a K-sport hand brake. that should be arriving next week. Looking forward to having a hand brake in the car. I'm sure it will help me drive the hairpins on Pikes Peak next year.

Stay Tuned...

Ken

Happy New Year Everyone.

Got in the new ATI Super Damper for the KA. Looking forward to smoothly upping the revs another 750 to 1000rpm. This will help us up the HP to the 450-500 planned for the race in 2010, as well as putting us right where we need to be for the huge Kelford 272 cams to do thier thing with greater efficiency. One of our new sponsors, Unorthodox Racing, is also sending along new pulleys for the power steering and alternator. Look forward to getting those in sometime next week.

ALSO...We are officially entered in the Hill Climb for 2010. With the help of all of our sponsors, and some generous donations form the fine people here at NICOclub, we were able to put together the entry fee and get it in just before the deadline today.

Thanks everyone here at NICO for oyur help!!!

I"ll update with pics when we get everything installed.

Ken.

It's on my end...we completely re-did the website and most of the photo filenames were changed, so the pics don't work. I'll get around to fixing the photo links shortly. In the meantime, go over to the Fatman website and you can see all teh photos there: fatmanracing.com

Thanks,Ken

Thanks very much! We're looking forward to a better year. Hope to see you there! And don't forget to come down for Fan Fest on the Friday night before the race. That's a pretty good time!

Looks like tons of fun man!Question: Would the remote turbo setup total cost be around the cost of a topmount or a bottom mount? And would it be something that a 19 yr old kid could do or take to a shop to do?

This system, like any other system has too many variables to plug in a standard price. It depends on the type of turbo you get, the piping you run, intercooler, etc. Best thing to do is talk to the guys at STS and see what they can come up with for you. As far as how difficult is it to install, it really depends on your mechanical skill level as to how much you could do on your own vs. having a shop do the work.

Happy New Year!

Got the header in and the new exhaust all bolted up. Fired tha car and it sounds great. With all the leaks fixed I can hear the turbo spin up at idle, and the exhaust note is completely different. Very cool stuff.

I still need to install the new damper, and get the front brakes and clutch bled before I go for a test drive. Hopefully that will all come together tomorrow.

Got the handbrake installed. Built the box and got it welded in. All that's left is to measure and order the new braided lines running to and from and I can call this small part of the project soup.

Next on the agenda is to completely re-do the center stack. It'll still be relatively ugly and all business, but that's how I like it. Function, Function, Function...and someday if I have a minute I might make it look pretty...ish.

I'll be re-locating the fuse panel and relays to inside the stack, and moving the brake bias adjuster to the dash as well as moving the fire pull to a more co-driver friendly position.

I'll also be moving the AEM ECU to a shelf behind the dash. That's the plan, anyway.

Photos, and such:
