I've gotten a P0440 (Evap Leak) code twice in my 97 Maxima, 155k miles. First time I got it, I retightened my gas cap, and cleared the code. The code returned the next day, I cleared the code, and it has not returned in three days.

In the event that it does return; I know that the Evap system is made made up of numerous components. Which one should I start with, when it comes to diagnosis?

Evap cannister.

edit: I also found this...

0705Diagnostic Trouble Code 0705 points to a problem with the Evaporative Emission Control System.

This malfunction is detected when the EVAP control system has a leak or the EVAP control system does not operate properly. (EVAP = EVAPorative emissions.)Possible causes include...- incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve- incorrect fuel filler cap- fuel filler cap vent remains open or fails to close- foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap- a leak in the line between the intake manifold and theEVAP Canister Vacuum Control Valve- foreign matter caught in the EVAP CVCV- leaks in the EVAP canister or fuel tank- leaks in the EVAP purge line (pipe and rubber tube)- EVAP purge line rubber tube bent- blocked or bent rubber tube to EVAP control system pressure sensor- loose or disconnected rubber tube- EVAP CVCV and circuit- EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve and circuit- absolute pressure sensor- tank fuel temperature sensor- MAP/BARO switch solenoid valve and circuit- blocked or bent rubber tube to MAP/BARO switch solenoid valve- O-ring of EVAP CVCV is missing or damaged- water separator- EVAP canister saturated with water- EVAP control system pressure sensor- refueling EVAP vapor cut valve- ORVR system leaks

Vent control valve is getting stuck open during testing likely. The vent control valve is only used for testing the system it service no functional purpose other wise to the EVAP system. I have replaced many of them for leak codes. the purge volume control valve ha dbeen changed at one point for the max. If you were to ever replace it there was a parts service file on it to replace/add other components to it so you would end up having to buy several other parts to replace it. I have done numerous repairs for that as wel but typically the code was for purge and not leak.
