The incident happened during the Long Tom Hill Climb in Sabie, a forestry town situated on the banks of the Sabie River in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The race took place on January 25th and 26th and covered 6.3 km.

Baard (47), who had also won the 2011 Knysna Hill Climb, crashed his Nissan GT-R on Saturday during the fourth run. There were no casualties and Baard attended the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday to receive his trophy.
