The Nissan GT-R may be running rings around its competition in terms of its seemingly impossible lap times at the Nurburgring, but disgruntled rival Porsche may finally have something to poke in the GT-R's face - the fact that the Nissan is the most expensive new car in the U.S. to insure.Using insurance quotes for a 40-year-old male driver, insurance website Insure.com has compiled a list of the twenty most expensive vehicles to insure, as well as the twenty cheapest vehicles, with surprise honors going to the Godzilla - insuring the ‘affordable’ supercar will cost punters $2,533 every year.

According to Insure.com, the reason the GT-R features so prominently is because of the fact that customers will buy the car for its speed and power, and they will be more likely to be involved in serious crashes. Other vehicles that get lumped into this group include the Dodge Viper, which ranked as the second most expensive vehicle to insure ($2,446/year) and the third-ranked BMW M6 ($2,236). High-performance vehicles such as the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, the BMW M5, the Lexus IS F, the Jaguar XK and the BMW M3 also made the top 20 list for the most expensive vehicles to insure.

Other categories where a clear correlation between vehicle class and insurance cost arose was that of luxury SUVs, such as the Mercedes G-Class, the Hummer H2, the Land Rover Range Rover, the Cadillac Escalade and the BMW X6 all making appearances in the top 20.

At the other end of the spectrum were smaller and cheaper vehicles that didn't offer much in the way of power but were big on safety. Interestingly, the five cheapest cars to insure were all from South Korea, with Hyundai and Kia featuring multiple entries in the cheapest five vehicles to insure. Meanwhile, minivans seems fairly cheap to insure also, with the Honda Odyssey, the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan all featuring on the list for cheapest vehicles to insure.

I didnt even think people still drove H2's?

I was considering getting rid of my pathfinder, and upgrading to a 08 911 or a new to me GTR (used 09) in a year or so and pick up a early 90's mini nissan truck for home/car projects but now I'm not so sure now, I think I might upgrade to a fully loaded Titan or Tundra and just build up another project car? who knows, maybe I'll build a lambo kit or something...and I'd be insuring it at 29 so I know it would be more for my age group...

Where are all the exotics on this list? The ferraris, Lambos and bentleys and and Rolls? And it's crazy that the S8 sedan is more expensive to insure the the R8 coupe supercar!!

What are these numbers based on? Reports like this are garbage....what company did they use? Where is the car being insured? What levels of coverage are being offered? Is the car being insured for market or agreed value? There are so many different variables that could cause that to go up or down...

Funny....Did I miss it or what?

Where is the Corvette??????

I would assume that with the Stability & Traction Control, AWD, Big a** brakes etc etc etc. It would def be cheaper than the Viper, Vette and other RWD sports cars.

Again Mofo's hate'n on the imports!!!!!!

I read this article but I still went ahead and bought my GT-R on Saturday. I figured the car is cheaper than a 911. I got my quote from my agent today: $425/6 months with $500 deductible.

This is stupid.

Take an average driver and tell them to go "haulass" in the top 2 cars.

Which one are they gonna lose it with?

Hell, I don't think the Viper even has ABS, much less stability control.

Pffft. Whatever.

My guess is the Cobalt probably gets stolen alot? Weird though huh! How about the Ford GT.....don't many of the owners crash those because they are too much car to handle?
