Hi, my name is Mike and I really could use some help. I have a big mess here and I'm trying to fix it without having to change the timming chain cover. First, I am a new member here, but have visited many times. Whoever posted the picture of the vacuum tube routing based on a drawing of the motor and color coded tubes, God bless you and thank you. I have had an 85 720 with the Z24 motor for 21 years and ran it to about 431,000 miles. It still runs like new, but is rusted so bad, I had to pull it off the road. I bought an 86 KK 4WD with a blown motor and figured a quick swap and driving in a few days. Boy, what a mess!!! The 86 has TB fuel injection, so I had to change the Intake Manifold, hence the need for the vac tube routing. Now, the last thing to hook up is the distributor wiring. The 85 has Vac advance and the 86 is electronic adv. I figured, well just swap the distributors. They aren't the same at the base and are not swapable. Neither the Haynes nor the Chiltons show detailed wiring of the dist. Both have 4 wires, but the 85 VA has thicker wires and the colors are diferent. If any one has any sugestions, I'd love to hear from you. Otherwise I'll have to change the timming cover... thanks!!

You could have kept the old carb and everything from the plenum up and swapped it onto the newer motor, also. I would think that would be easier, looking at the manual...

I'm a little lost. You're trying to put the Z24 into the new one? If so... no need to go FI, the carb would work fine. I may just not be following along well, however. There is a pretty awesome write up here, however, if you're looking to run the new motor. Regardless... with these old things, the FI system is NOT the way to do it.

I took the motor out of the 85 and put it in the 86. All of the wiring to the carb on the 85 motor is different because of the FI on the 86 chassis. I just figured to change the Intake man. and put the FI one on it and be on my way. But the distributors aren't interchangable. I need to put the vac advance dist back into the motor, but the harness is wired for elec advance. I don't know how to wire it as it is different than the 86. Also, do I need to go back to the 85 coils, as they are different also?

"wiring" for the carb? Carbs don't have wires, that why they're carbs...

There are 3 plugs that go to the old carb, for the idle solenoid and such. The carb isn't the issue, that's all done, the distributor wiring is what I'm hung up on.
