I wanted more up-to-date auto reliability information that included actual repair rates. So in late 2005 I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now reports absolute repair rates that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so it's possible to report on new models like the 370Z quickly once enough owners sign up to participate and to track cars closely as they age.

More participants are needed for both the 350Z and the 370Z.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to all results, not just those for the Z, for free.

For the details, and to sign up to help out:

It's working now. Perhaps when you tried it the server was down briefly.

So far, the 350z is NOT being researched with the Delta site. The z population is much smaller than the main stream car buyer.

The number sold has only a moderate impact on getting a large enough sample. Nissan has sold enough Zs that this shouldn't be a factor.

The car I have the largest sample for is the 2007 Nissan Versa, with 138 signed up. The Versa certainly isn't a top seller. But the NICO forum for the car is very active, and has been extraordinarily helpful.

With the 350Z, the 2003 is about halfway to the minimum, and the 2004 a bit behind that.

Both 2003 and 2004 are about half way to the minimum.

In response to requests, I've added a Common Auto Repairs Database (CARDb) to my site.

Currently it's just possible to add common repairs to the database. When the database has been populated, owners will be asked to report whether or not their car has actually had these problems. So we can find out how common "common repairs" actually are.

My suspicion: usually less common than people think.

The form includes a field for a forum thread URL, so people can be directed here for thorough discussions if there is a thread discussing the repair. I hope this will help make more people aware of this excellent forum in addition to providing more details about the repair.

115 owners now signed up. Thanks, guys.

That said, nearly half of these are 2003s. More participants would be helpful for all years.

There will be a result for the 2003 in August -- started collecting data too recently to include it in the May set.

A result was recently posted for the 2003. It appears to have a repair rate close to the average. The sample size was small, so this result is asterisked and not visible to non-members on the site.

We are now collecting data on the 2004 and 2005 as well--but very much need more participants for these and other years.

Next set of results in November. So far 152 Z owners have signed up. A good start, but more are needed.

We're c single response short of the minimum for the 2003. So we're likely to have a full result for it in a couple of weeks. But farther from the minimum would be nice.

For other years, we need more cars to get to the minimum.

Got that response. Reliability of the 2003 seems about average.

We hope to have results for other model years with the next update, in February. But it's going to be close--more participants needed.

We're just over the minimum sample size with the 2004 and 2005, and only three or four owners short of the minimum with the 2006 and 2007. So additional participants would be very helpful.

Just a couple short for the 2006 and 2007 now. Who can put them over the top?

Even the 2008 is now well over half way to the minimum.

And then there's the 2009. We'd love to have an initial result ASAP. As soon as we have enough data, we'll provide it. Could be as early as May...

The latest Car Reliability Survey results were recently posted. The reported number of repair trips per 100 cars per year for the 2003 350Z, 64, is about average and close to "better than average."

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With additional participants we could provide more precise results and include all model years. The 2004 and 2005 should make it into the May update. We'd love to have a quick result for the 370Z--just a matter of getting enough owners involved.

We now have a separate results page for each model. The one for the Nissan 350Z:

In about a month we'll start previewing the next set of results to participants. More always helpful, for all model years.

Especially need 2009s, to provide a quick initial result for the new car.

Well, I guess that's one way to bump the thread. Which helps, because we continue to need more Z owners.

We'll have a reliability stat for the 2003 in early May. Not sure about the other model years. The more owners participate, the better then information we can provide to everyone.

Updated results soon for the 2003. Continue to need more participants for all model years.

Especially seeking owners of the new 2009 370Z.

We have updated results for the 350Z to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2005: 36, very small sample size

2003: 59

Better than average in both cases.

A big thanks to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We'd love to have a quick result for the new 370Z--just a matter of getting enough participants.

Everyone lie... say they are amazing, perfect, no issues.

It will keep resale up.

I've had quite a few issues.

If anyone feels inclined in this direction, please don't sign up. If you've already signed up, but feel you can't honestly report your car's repairs, please contact me asking to be removed.

The impact on resale value would be insignificant--this is not the only source of reliability information. So distorted results would become untrusted results, which would just be wasted effort on everyone's part. The point of the whole exercise is for car owners to provide each other with better reliability information.

To put it more bluntly: don't piss in your drinking water!

Now, for those who do want to help create the best possible information, but who haven't signed up yet:
