I just bought a j30, and will attempt to replicate your work (as all of my shocks are beyond blown). If I use the shorter 280zx shocks on the rear, will the front sit high on stockers?

I haven't noticed any change in mine.

It looks like the Super Beetle shocks may not need a PVC pipe spacer. The shock I got includes a metal hat that looks like it might work. Anybody else get one of these spacer/hats in their box? Did it fit???

Yoda, the "super beetle" shocks I spoke of are the ones J30_Kidd used. Monroe 73948. They seemed like the most precise fit in his posts. My Monroe 73948 box came with a metal hat/spacer that was the exact thickness needed (in lei of the PVC pipe spacer). So I figured it would be a plug & play install... WRONG.

I attempted the install this afternoon with lackluster results. This metal hat/spacer made the strut body too tall so the big nut could not be screwed down  Okay, so I went with the PVC spacer method. Should've been smooth sailing from what I read here... but I could not find a way to evenly sand down the inside diameter of the pipe, so there is a little play side to side until the nut is tightened down on the strut body.

It's all back together, but is making a clunking noise when I drive. Any ideas??? I chose to delete the hose "bushing" that others placed right below the threads on the strut piston... I can't see that being it, as it all fit snug when bolted together. Kills me that I may have to disassemble all this & add that s*** bushing.

Seemed like an easy install online but WOW was I unprepared for the belly of this beast!!!

Thanks, you saved me a lot of money and the car feels great. Would you happen to have any idea about a cheaper alternative for the power window motor and regulator for the 95 j30t?

If anyone replaces their shocks & still has a funny ride, get a FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. The new shocks helped but I still had too much random bounce/sway. The alignment took care of this. Now the J ride is "acceptable".

Sorry for the noob question, but I can't seem to find the info on the Z31 springs anywhere. Are they a direct replacement for the J30 springs?

Also, thread back from the dead lol

i hate to resurrect a thread, but i am curious about the new beetle front struts. no year was ever listed for them, that i remember reading. so, do we know how they worked or such? i'm not much for the extra work that is needed for the 300zx struts, so i'm curious if the beetle ones worked right.....

It is fairly impossible to decipher solid information from this thread about which strut is the best. I do not feel that using a strut insert from a car that weighs 1000lbs less is a good idea, even just for the life of the strut insert itself. Also all the extra work involved trying to figure out where spacers need to go, etc.

A common upgrade for MkII Supra owners is to use SW20 rear strut inserts for the front suspension. Looking for some information I found this thread which lists the SW20 rear insert as a replacement for 1983 280zx front struts on Datsun 510s.

so, do you know if the SW20's work on the J30 or just using the specs?
