Postby piezan76 » Sat Feb 27, 2010 9:52 am

hey guys love the site setup with great links and assistance, i just bought a 2005 altima 3.5 se 5 speed, the car is great, decent power reliable and easy on the eyes but the car is horrible on gas it never goes over 14.1 mpg no engine light on and the traction is bad to 1st gear is pretty much useless, anyone have any recommendations on either topics i would greatly apprieciate it

thanks

Welcome to the Nico Family Michael. Congrats on the Altima. 14.1 MPG seems rediculous. The previous owner might have not done the maintenance for a while which is why the MPG is crappy. If I were you I would do a complete tune up. I'm talking Oil, Filter, spark plugs, wires, and tranny fluid. I'm not sure if the 05's have a cap and rotor for spark plug wires, but if so replace the cap and rotor as well. Once again welcome to the family. Any questions or help you need just post and you will get a responce to .

ask your mechanic if he can do a fuel pressure test, if it's higher then spec.(psi) then that could explain it. a tune-up is a good idea regardless.

if you have a fuel pressure regulator find the vacume hose on it and dissconnect it. if the psi doesnt change it's a bad regulature. if you didnt already know.

"kinda got lazy"? c'mon dont treat your car like that! next time just do "half an oil change" while you're at it.

most cars don't have regulators these days but there is always a port somewhere on the fuel rail. another possibility is a bad injector or two. one little test you can do when you take a pressure test is to shut off the car and see if the fp goes down. if it does you have a leak in your fuel system or a leaking injector.
