Hi!

I need some advice. I just bought a brand new 2011 Nissan Rogue. We happened to pop the hood last night and under the hood is a cloth covering thing. Well, my engine burnt a hole right through it and now there is green stuffing all tangled all throughout the engine.

WERE THEY SUPPOSED TO TAKE IT OFF?

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks for the pic, it really helped.

So I went to my driveway in the dark and use my flashlight. I have that protective covering too. Personally, I I believe it's some heat resistant/ stock hoodliner insulation thing.

But yours is not some burned hole, it's freaking caught on fire and practically burned the whole thing! Not some little hole.

It belongs there, the dealer should replace it. Plus look into why it burned. Never seen that before~ :wtf2:

I really thought these things are not suppose to burn because it is suppose to act like a firewall too..... :bs:

ps- just did research online and found this...the true function of the hood liner. It's a fire blanket. If the engine catches on fire, the fasteners to the hood melt and the blanket drops smothering the fire. That's the theory anyway. Given how much oils has gotten on most of them, somehow I don't think it'll actually put the fire out but, it might give you a few additional seconds to get out before the car becomes engulfed in flames.

That is odd, you know it looks like rodent damage but considering the location it's not very likely mice climbed up there but who knows i'm sure it's possible.

Does it actually look and smell burnt, or just torn up? If you had a fire you'd know it for sure, the fire would sure do a lot more damage than just to the hood heat blanket, you'd expect to see extensive damage to the engine bay and at the very least everything would be charred and plastic melted. If there was a fire, you'd expect the plastic wire conduits, plastic air conduit, etc. to melt first. If all these things look fine, I think I'll guess rodent damge, it's amazing the locations mice will get into and the damage they can do. I'd check around for mouse droppings....just a guess but I think I'd bet money on it. Let us know if you get this figured out!

Take it in to Nissan, It could of got on the drive belt.
And the burning smell could probably the cloth getting in the heat shield or radiator.
The Fire would of melted your intake mani, So theres no fire.
Most likely a rodent got in there and was trying to keep warm lol.
Idk if Warranty would cover it cause of Natures doing.

FYI: A replacement hood insulator panel is ~ $160.

Fire is ruled out.
It would have taken an army of rodents to eat up so much from a new vehicle.
Please take a critical look at the condition of your battery. Dilute Sulphuric Acid from the battery could be a likely culprit.

Good idea, check the battery to rule it out, but I'm pretty confident it's rodents.

If the battery caused that damage I doubt it would still be working, that car wouldn't turn over. And it's amazing the damage that rodents can cause, one mouse alone could have chewed up that hood insulator in a matter of a day or two, I've seen the results of their destructive chewing many, many times, that hood insulator is nothing for them to chew up in short period of time.
