I dont have that noise, but thanks.mexillis wrote:I know 4-5 M's that do it. Check yours.
I believe there was a TSB that describes your situation, but I thought it only applied to newer M's. Maybe it applied to mine but I didn't have the issue, I simply don't remember. I saw the TSB, though, and it required a very specific amount of grease and the axle being installed rotated 180 degrees from the way it was removed, presumably this was to counter any wear the rust may have caused (I don't think the TSB specifically mentioned rust). For the record, in case the OP wants to mention it when getting that M checked out, the TSB number is ITB08-018b.hoaapple wrote:I had that problem awhile back and also whenever I would take off from a complete stop, there would be a clank from the left rear. It was taken to the dealer and supposedly, it is from a build up of rust on the axle. So they had to take the axle out and apply add'l grease and reinstalled. Whatever it was, I no longer have that noise when changing gears or taking off.
Oh wow thank you for actually uploading a vid.finfinM45S wrote:Mine does the same:

Im going to the shop tomorrow for it, hopefully not a bearing or diff
An axle doesnt have to be broken in half to be "broken". One or more of the bolts could be broken, some of the splines could be stripped and not holding well. Things like that. Just cause something us broken doesnt mean you cant use it at all. There are tons of POS cars that are broken and still drive.finfinM45S wrote:broken axle = cant drive; Been there done that in my accord years ago, snap!

When I had this exact problem, I dont know for sure it was a "broken axle", that is just what the dealership told me was wrong. And after it was replaced the noise was gone. It could have been something else but the dealership didnt mention it.
