Well, just noticed it today. I have a 2006 M45 sport with 75K on it.
I put the gear in R to reverse. Then I heard some kind of metallic noise("kee keek") from the rear.
I was like what the heck. So I put it back to D, and it it did it again. When I drive, the noise isn't there. Haven't tried high speed driving though, just low speed.
Also when I was turning, thought I heard little bit of it.
I hit a pothole in downtown LA last night and it was pretty big one. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
Since I won't be able to take it to dealer for a few weeks, I just wanted to ask you guys if any of you had similar problem.
I do have extended warranty with $100 deductible btw.
Thank you in advance.

its just the "claw" engaging and releasing when shifting into gears. That's if it only does it from P to R to D vice versa, if it does it while you drive then IDK.

I had that problem awhile back and also whenever I would take off from a complete stop, there would be a clank from the left rear. It was taken to the dealer and supposedly, it is from a build up of rust on the axle. So they had to take the axle out and apply add'l grease and reinstalled. Whatever it was, I no longer have that noise when changing gears or taking off.

I believe there was a TSB that describes your situation, but I thought it only applied to newer M's. Maybe it applied to mine but I didn't have the issue, I simply don't remember. I saw the TSB, though, and it required a very specific amount of grease and the axle being installed rotated 180 degrees from the way it was removed, presumably this was to counter any wear the rust may have caused (I don't think the TSB specifically mentioned rust). For the record, in case the OP wants to mention it when getting that M checked out, the TSB number is ITB08-018b.

Oh wow thank you for actually uploading a vid.
Yeah EXACTLY this is what mine has.
Definitely not normal, since mine never had this noise before.
Please let us know what it is. I will have to take it in in a few weeks.

my car had that same exact noise and problem when I got it, it was a broken axle according to the dealership. They replaced it for free even though I didnt have any warranty yet.

Oddly enough, same axel too.

Came back from the mechanic, he said it was the rear brake caliper grease and shimmy grease was dry, he re greased the caliper and pad shims and the noise is gone.

Wow that is glad to hear that it was needed to be greased.
I hope mine is the same, and not broken axle.
What I am concerned is that the night before I hit a huge pothole. It was pretty nasty (Be aware in downtown LA!!).
Then I started hearing it the next day(don't recall if I heard it that night).
Well, can't wait to take mine in.

An axle doesnt have to be broken in half to be "broken". One or more of the bolts could be broken, some of the splines could be stripped and not holding well. Things like that. Just cause something us broken doesnt mean you cant use it at all. There are tons of POS cars that are broken and still drive.

When I had this exact problem, I dont know for sure it was a "broken axle", that is just what the dealership told me was wrong. And after it was replaced the noise was gone. It could have been something else but the dealership didnt mention it.

True, a bad axle could be a failing axle, my mechanic said it was possible just like enigma said about the splines etc, and yes ive seen cars driving around broke!! :)
