Well i was cleaning my K&n air filter and then i took the whole air filter housing out, and decided to see if this would change anything.

What i did is take a dremel and boxcutter knife and cut holes in the plastic box thingy underneath like so:

Before: before when i used to accelerate to pass it always i guess used to delay like half a second before you actually felt the pull, so i think it was trying to get air,

After: takes like 15 minutes to do this, but there definitely is a big difference in terms of when your accelerating or passing etc, it pulls right away, unlike before when you hit the pedal there would be a delay before it would go, and probably the only way you will see the difference is if you do this, but there is.

anyways, thoughts/ideas/comments etc.

EDIT: this is all located behind your drivers side foglight/cover

awesome i took that out awhile ago and its sitting in my garage i thought it was restricting my air flow aswell . I just decided to leave it out i might connect a hose and put it back in but like you i noticed a difference right away without it there. I moved that little sensor attached to it right beside my K&N filter.

Yeah, I just completely removed it and pulled it out. It gives somewhat of a ram-air effect but nothing too crazy.

I also noticed when I pulled mine out that I didn't have an engine air temp sensor, the hole where it would go was plugged up by the factory. I wonder why that is.

What exactly am I looking at in those pictures? I can't find any reference points.

kyoo, thats the airbox resonator you are looking at. It is there to quiet down the intake noise and it does slightly restrict airflow. in the second pic, you are looking through a hole in the bumper where the foglights are supposed to go.

The VG33 resonator looks different (IIRC) its black from what i remember. But same function. I ripped the entire assembly out a long time ago and never looked back. That thing is for grandmas.

fueler, any chance you can take some pics of the 3.3 setup/removal for us?

Interesting to see this little 'mod'.I did the exact same thing earlier this summer, but never thought to mention it on the forum. Maybe I should have. I also cut a hole in the top of my airbox to bring in more direct air.I'm not sure if it made any noticeable difference, but it definitely sounds better when I punch it.

its pretty simple, doesnt need pics, you gotta jack the car up, remove the drivers side front wheel (for ease of access) and go in through the plastic fenderwell liner, unbolt the thing and youre good to go! I remember there was one mystery bolt that was a pain in the a** to get to.... and theres a sensor that you will have to leave dangling (thats OK)

I removed the resonator and used plastic flexible intake ducting to create a "ram-air"... I remember someone else on the board doing the same.

Thanks fueler!

jcpath69, that's pretty sweet. I remember seeing that before, it was fueler's post. I plan on doing this soon, as it's cheap and easy. If I went with the flexible tubing method, I'd probably put some sort of a screen over the end of the tubing. Not anything restrictive, just enough to block bugs and whatnot.

I sorta just did this. I drilled two marble-sized holes in each of those three cylinders, and I can already tell a difference. I used a drill because at the time, I couldn't find anything else that would work. I tried a box cutter but that didn't cut it (bad pun? haha). I'm gonna either drill some more holes or see if I can find something to just cut the ends off.

Haha, nah I already tried a jigsaw, wouldn't fit.I drilled some more holes, I don't think I need to do any cutting. Each tube has like five holes now haha.

Just take the driver side fog light out and there it is.

other than being a resonator, I thought the "utter" looking tubes were there to collect water if it git into the intake, which is just above the driver front wheel above the fender liner.

Water could get in and not block air flow allowing the car to continue and of course avoid the dreadded hydro-lock.

The open resonator tubes may allow for extra air, but the original openning was in a nice low pressure area.

Does more intake volume mean slower moving air?

Now run three flex tubes to the front and connect them to the resonator opennings.

is it worth it can you hear it when you step on it and will it make your filter dirtier faster?

it won't really make your filter dirtier faster at all, and hell if it does just get a K&n one and you can clean it in 20 mins, but small price to pay if your filter gets a tad bit more dirtier faster, when you can notice a change when you step on it and it pulls much much better and right away.

i removed that whole canister and my filter does not get dirty any quicker than before. if your worried about that then you can simply place a mesh or something over that big hole to prevent large debris

Does anyone know if this mod has affected gas mileage at all??

I'm all for improved performance, especially with the doggy 3.3. If it doesn't decrease gas mileage, it's a no-brainer. Already have the K&N installed, did that the first day I got her.

Good suggestion guys, any other tricks up your sleeves to improve performance cheaply?
