My, "I don't know when to quit." build thread (pics added)

Postby project213 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 3:13 pm

So, I've been floating around this forum since about 2009. I have had 2 different build threads, neither of which have gone very far before stopping due to the loss of jobs an just all around bad luck.

But once again, I have found myself a job, put away some money, an bought myself the third s13 hatch project. With this one I have decided that no matter what hapoens this car will be finished. Even if it kills me!! :ohno:

With all that being said I am afraid that I must apologize in adv ance for any sort of idiocracies in the thread as it will be done only from my phone. So on to the good stuff, shall we?

So about a month ago, I had put away fidteen hundred dollars an decided to start looking for a ne s13. After about a week combing through craigslist adds an posts in local forums I had found an 89 coupe with its original single cam, a 5sp swap, an 70k miles on the clock. Along with a folded passenger side from were the first of two owners got to close to a gaurd rail.

After about 150 text messages an 20 minutes on the phone we had plans set for me to go an pick the car up in 5 days (which was my next day off an the car was a 4 hour drive away.).

Eager to get my new car, I finished up the work week in agony all the way up until the day before d-day. With only hours left in the day, I recieved a phone call from a good friend about a hatch. He proceeded to explain a few details about the car that got me rather excited, then told me it was only 1500 bucks. I, with a large grin simply asked "whats the catch?" An I got a reply that I now know was an understatement. "Some assembly required.)

I was ready for a project so I figured what the hell, I'll at least go take a look at it. So with 1500 cash in my pocket I took the 25 minute drive to go see the hatch. An I left with a title, a bill of sale, an a key in hand less than an hour later.

Exactally 2 weeks too the day later, I went back with a trailer an a pickup truck, an I brought this home.

Image
A 1990 hatch with full five lug but no hood, no doors, no bumpers, no interior, lights, weather stripping, or front breaks. Among other things.

But, it did have this....

Image
(S13 black top sr20)

An this....

Image
(Tomei expreme elbow)

This too....

Image
(Full 3in invidia stainless catback)

Cant forget these....

Image
(Meagan tracks)

It also came with a full XS Power fmic, Greddy type s bov, Tomei rocker arm stoppers, a full gasket kit, aem wideband, 180sx vlsd, an s15 6 speed transmision, a mazworx fly wheel, a stage 2 clutch, and an ecu tuned by xat.

Not bad for 1500 dollars an a couple hours working in the rain to get it on the trailer.

So my first order of buisness was to start sourcing body panels. I already had a minty single cam front ready for paint still in my garage from previous cars, so all that was left was doors, a hood, an a hatch (the one on the car has cancer issues).

Image

Now adorned with doors, i took the little cash I had an bought a 3 gallon jug of purple power, a wire brush, some primer, an some scuff pads an went ham.

I started by pulling the ac components an selling them to make a quick buck, an the power steering pump followed suit (Ill explain why later). An I scrubbed the livong hell out of the block.

Image
(Still have to finish but you get the idea.)

I also did some work on the pinch welds in the wheel well as i plan on going pretty low

Driver side
Image

Passenger side
Image

I then started to clean up an prime small sections of the bay at a time until i got here

Image

An thats where im at with the build as of now. I will add more tomorrow evening when I finish up for the day.

Until then you guys have a good one. :werd:

That's great for $1500! Can't even get an sr20 swap worth anything for that around here, let alone a shell!

I did get really lucky with this car. Even taking the goods an the bads hand in hand the pros definately out weigh the cons. Im just super stoked to be back in an s chassis an I cant wait for whats to come.

I will be editing the op as soon as I can get to a comuter. It needs a little work lol.

They definately are a unique vehical. I dont think that I have seen very many cars that take ahold of somebody the way that these do. They can easily become an addiction lol. Good luck with your hunt for an s chassis of your own. I look forward to seeing a build thread from you in the future

Ive not yet driven on them as the car hasnt been driveable since its been in my possesion. But I have heard very good things about them.

I dont wanna be like every other godspeed hater an say they are junk because I havn't ever owned a set. But from all the reviews that I have read, I would never buy a set.

I personally love fortune autos. Its an amazing product with great customer service. But they are a little pricey starting at $1k.

The Meagans are a great coilover for the price though, an a lot of people have had a great experience with them.

Nice find. You have a good foundation to work up from. Wish I had a few parts cars to pick stuff off of. Keep up the hard work and it'll all be worth it in the end!

The only thing that is strange to me is why did the guy you bought it from part the car out if there is nothing wrong with the engine?!? What was wrong with the car? Also since he did part the car out why did he keep the engine?

The car was never parted.

Several months before i purchased the car it was stolen an several things were removed by the thief. After the investigation the car was recovered an returned to the owner shy a few things. (Driver door, hood, bumper, pass fender, tailights, int. weather stripping etc..). If you look close at the engine bay shots youll see where the vin tag is gone an the stamp has been cut out.

He dicided to make it a track car since the vins were all removed (has a rebuilt title now an was revined by the state). But he works six days a week an didnt have the time for such a project. Hence why it was so cheap lol.

You could remove the rubber strip between the hood and the cowl, should have the same effect as spacing the hood up without looking funny.
Unless you like that look.

Planning on removing that as well. I like the look as much as the function though lol.

An, every little bit will help keep the heat from the soon to be midmount at bay. Ill also be adding a oil cooler an a PBM radiator with fan an shroud setup.

Im always cleaning my car (when theyre together) so that shouldnt be to big a deal but if it does get bad than i can always remove them down the road. But for now ill see where things go.

Im so grateful for getting this car, especially after all my bad luck in the past with builds. So this one will most definately be getting royal treatment.

Okay everyone, sorry for this long over due update but I have had a lot going on in my personal life lately. Sob story aside though, heres some of what has happend so far.

Thanks man.

Honestly, pinch welds were done with a regular old hammer lol. I just started at the door an went from there. Im kind of ocd about stuff being even so i spent about 45 minutes on each one,

Just pick a spot n go slow. If you go to high in a spot just tap it down.

Plans set in stone as of now, Intake mani is going to get bead blasted next week, then getting cleared.

Block completly cleaned.

Oil cooler set up going on.

Fresh mani going back on.

Stay tuned for more. :werd:
